Most of it is cans , bottles

Question is have you ever thrown or dropped litter , and why ?

To answer your question no, I never done so being a Muslim its one of my mannerisms and duty to keep my home land clean.

I don't understand why some people can leave all their discarded, usually McDonald's, packaging on a bench in town when there's a bin only a couple of yards away

This his something that really winds us up , especially at beautiful locations , muppets visit then leave all their rubbish instead of taking it with them or use bins . Catch them put them in stocks on the local village green & throw rotten veg at them

Now, it fucking infuriates me.. when at school there were big media campaign to stop dropping litter .. that changed my focus .. but now, it down to lack of education and take away outlets .... life story in 7 lines lol

I never drop litter.

As a child my mom always took our rubbish and put it in her bag until we reached a bin or home.

I did the same with my lot.

None of us drop litter.

The worst that I've seen is those who throw rubbish out of car windows.

And those that have thrown glass bottles!!

I've had words before when I've seen this!

Good on you op.i live rurally and luckily theres a picking team in the village that do this, i often have to pick up from my gates the occasional bottle/can maccys bag its usually delivery drivers that fling it out.

Well done OP, nice to read about someone who cares. A lot of the litter near me appears to be wind blown, rather than discarded at that location.

We had decades of public bin removal, from fear of IRA bin bombs. No excuse for people not to look for one, but there aren't as many as there used to be. Modern society tends to be made up of lazy cunts which doesn't help

Round here we have black recycling boxes instead of wheelie bins and if it's windy a lot of it ends up all over the streets before the collectors arrive. There is so much litter here as a result.

kudos to you OP, i don’t litter but don’t think i could bring myself to pick up other peoples

it never even crosses my mind to just chuck stuff on the ground , but its a subconscious action to put it away in my pocket or bag for later and i think that must just come from being taught good habits in childhood , so i would assume its just the opposite for people who do litter in that they didn't create those good habits as a kid and rather than them justifying what they do they just don’t even think about it

Parents definitely influence the kids.

I've watched kids in McDonald's clear their own rubbish to the bin but then also pick someone else's left rubbish up off a table and bin that too.

I don't litter, I was raised to keep it with me until I found a bin or take it home. My children are the same, they hate seeing rubbish on the ground and have often put other rubbish in the bin when binning their own. There is no excuse for littering, it's disgusting.

i found an article that says how long things take to break down in land fill ... some of it is eye opening ... 450 years for tyres , 100 years for baby wipes , tin foil NEVER

says most veggies are between 5 days to a month but fruits can take longer especially if acidic - apple cores 2 months and orange and banana peels 6 months but the nutrients in all of them make them good for composting (not sure if composting actually breaks if down quicker?

not sure i can link it but search how long it takes 50 common items to decompose and the website is something called stacker if interested

Well done Op for helping clear the rubbish. I too do it around my village with a small team. I also pick up dog poo off the paths. I think the Councils and Highway Agencies are a little to blame for removing bins at pit stops or not emptying bins often enough. It gets blown everywhere. The A303 running past me is disgusting.

I walk everywhere and the amount of disposable masks I see in the hedgerows and mushed into the pavement is so bad. I don’t understand the mentality of just throwing it down... I’d definitely shame someone if I saw them.

There was a documentary on landfills not long ago and they went to one that was capped 40 years ago dug part of it up to see what actually had broken down and apart from food literally everything was just like it was put in yesterday even newspapers were readable

Litter became I thing when I was a kid. Those of a certain age will remember the TV adverts of people chucking stuff out of car windows in the countryside.

It’s one of the things I hate most about modern humanity. The idea that you just chuck stuff and someone else sorts out the impact.

I’m the “mum” at festivals telling the groups of kids off and handing out bin bags. I will point out that you just dropped something accidentally if I see you drop a can. I’m also the one that comes home with other people’s rubbish as I hate seeing it.

When I camp I comb pretty much every blade of grass checking for a scrap of litter.

Think it should be on the curriculum that all schools do a litter pick once a term.

Might make the next generation think twice about chucking their stuff and they might influence their parents to do the same.

Littering really boils my piss, we often go litter picking around the woods and the lanes and the things that get dumped are unbelievable. Last week in the woods we found a traffic cone, a wheel off a mountain bike and a cool box. Mixed in with the usual food wrappers cans and boxes.

And then there are the things blown or thrown into the fields, we are frequently picking up the remains of those foil helium balloons from the fields and out of trees. Don’t even get me started on those ridiculous Chinese lantern things.
