Dyeing underwear

In a ball gown because that's how we roll in N. Devon

Has anyone done it? Can it be done? I really want a brightly coloured basque but I can't find one to fit that will have all the appropriate scaffolding to stop the girls from heading south. So I thought about getting a white or ivory one and some clothing dye.

Does anyone have any idea if it can be done?

I guess it depends on the fabric x

I was thinking that..... but the cheap ones would probably not be the same as the over shoulder boulder holder types

"I guess it depends on the fabric x"

Definitely this, particularly on underwear where you may have different fabrics. Some may take the dye and some won't.

The stitching maybe an issue, but it could be a feature

What fabric is it?

If it's satin or anything shiny then it won't hold the dye.

X

That was my worry. I've been googling and it isn't entirely clear.... says satin is tricky but doesn't say no.

You remember those pens from when we were very small children.

You coloured it on the fabric then blew it with a hairdryer and it expanded. I can't remember what they were called.

I can smell the hot plasticy smell tho!

I wouldn't recommend it. The dye will take differently to the different fabrics and elastics/straps/etc. When we make stuff it takes a lot of trial and error to get the different parts to match. I appreciate the frustration as a larger busted lady though.

Anything made with man made fabric is very difficult to dye as the fibre isn’t porous.

Its unlikely to work. Synthetic fabrics won't dye well. Undies probably won't like the repeated washing to get the dye to take. Sorry

somewhere, someplace

You can get specific polyester dyes, the stitching may dye differently though if it's cotton or a cotton/poly mix

Just as a random FYI for anyone it might be useful for, the best home dyes for synthetic fabrics are the stove top ones! I liked Rit when I was at uni. Depending on the fabric, adding salt or vinegar can help too.

You could try a bridal shop as they often dye things to match.

I dyed a pretty white bra to match a specific dress..... the shoulder straps took the dye but nothing else did.
