Great evening, amazing Olympic Couldron... but why oh why do they keep wheeling out McCartney whose voice is clearly nowhere near what it was. I could see Her Maj turn to Prince Phil and ask, "Isn't that that same geezer who was warbling outside our house a few weeks ago?"

Well done Britain. Amazing ceremony.

what a great evening there were some truly memorable bits in the ceremony something for every emotion.

Seeing Mohamad Ali looking so ill and frail was a sad moment when you think back to his career but great that he was there. The cauldron lighting was a great twist too from the handing over to the next generation and the kettle from each country making one big flame in unison was a great idea.

staines

apparently in the McCartney family there is a good singer and a good clothes designer. Unfortunately due to a mixup they got Stella to design the GB team outfit and got Paul to sing.

the whole world watched it live... except for the US... and they are only up to the Mr.Bean bit....

to say they are confused is an understatement.... lol

I have had to explain the industrial revolution and the NHS to them so far... god I am like an interpretor... I don't think they are going to get a lot of the music segments.....

Any Brit who slags off that should be stripped off their citizenship, taken to the coast and set adrift.

That was fantastic!!!!

I clicked on when there were folks dancing round a maypole and thought, hmmm, then minute by minute it grew into something utterly awsome and came to the same conclusion.

Highlight of the show was Her Maj taking part in the Bondesque slot and 'parachuting in', closely followed by Mr Bean, but nothing can top that couldron. I thought Barcelona had done an amazing job with the archer shooting a flaming arrow to light it but our one was so much more inventive and innovative. It was a fantastic display of British accomplishment that served to remind 1bn people across the globe just what these Islands have given the world over the years.

Totally fantastic opening ceremony. The only thing that I didn't enjoy was McCartney at the end. He really should retire from performing now.

I loved the way that every country carried a part of the cauldron very symbolic of what the Olympics is about.

I'm always proud to be Scouse, but having watched that last night I was truely proud to be British too. Huge Congrats to Danny Boyle, a man who hails from Radcliffe near Bury, so as usual it took us Northerners to make sure the Cockney party went off to perfection

It will remain after the Olympics and Paralympics are over and the plan is to have a restaurant up there. We'll all come to love it as we do with all new public art.

Marveilleux... (French)

Wow.... (Aussies)

Awesome.... (NBC)

Just a sample of what others were saying as the show evolved. See when we are just 'us' ..just 'British' the world loves it. The whole thing was just a celebration of our Green and Pleasant land, music, history, heritage and what we have given the world. (Heard one US commentator admit he thought the USA invented World Wide Web!).

It was done with style, passion, humour and excellence.

London 2012 is off and running...

Oh and yes hey Jude was totally the right song to get 80,000 people singing. Just a shame now McCartney has lost it ...

And whoever thought of the Queen arriving in a helicopter accompanied by 'Mr Bond' ...
