Does anyone else see a link between mental illness and heightened sexuality and general lack of inhibitions and thus being drawn to this type of lifestyle? Is it a form of addiction/self medication?

I'm not in any shape or form saying everyone on here is like this but the percentage of people that I have met who either have a mental health condition or actually work in mental health services ( Or in my case both!) seems disproportionately high compared to the proportion of said people in general society.

Thoughts anybody?

Perhaps because people who suffer from mental health conditions often find it harder to find and maintain normal one to one relationships, for all sorts of reasons. But still have the same basic physical needs as everyone else and it's easier to have NSA sex and worry less about thier social skills?

What % of the population do you think use this site....compare that to the alleged 1 in 4 with a mental health condition and perhaps theres your link its not that people who are have unusual sexual appetites in fact to my knowledge most of the meds associated to mental health have a negative effect on libido, it's just possibly that there are more people out there with a mental health condition than people imagine? Just my thoughts...

I dont think ive ever met anyone with a mental health condition, or if i have they hide it well and i dont have one myself

The most common mental health condition is depression and the medication they give you as a rule lowers your sex drive

Not particularly sure where your first question is coming from but you certainly raise some valid points.

The reason I mentioned it is that the amount of people that I have met who cover my criteria are at around 75% and that is being fairly conservative, especially bearing in mind that not everyone is comfortable admitting something carrying such stigma.

As for the meds, well that is a bit of a double edged swirled as they can work both ways, plus just because somebody's libido has been lessened you've still got to factor in what it was like in the first instance. If it was off the richter scale to start with, then it could be significantly lessened and yet still be abnormal in many peoples' eyes.

I'm not trying to be controversial or anything here, I'm just interested in if anyone else has had similar experiences to me, or is it just coincidence or just that Bi-polar etc. people attract similar members of the opposite sex?

I would ask which mental health condition.....when manic you probably would be up for most things but when depressed you cant get out of bed (and wouldnt do anything with anyone who was sharing it with you) so it would likely even its self out.....

Yeah clinical depression is hardly going to have you swinging your testicles over the neighbours fence for a bit of 'how's your father', am talking more mania/hypermania, personality disorders etc. (I'm Bi-Polar personally so am fullly aware of the destructiveness of both depression and mania).

I'm pretty down at the moment and wondering why I even started rambling on about this to be honest

Sorry, don't think I explained myself very well there. I didn't mean in general, I meant the fact about such as myself finding such a high proportion of similar people

I think alot eacape into sex ... and can lead from all sorts of things being unhappy in life and also mental health things . Some turn to drink and drugs some sex .. And at times it just gets out of control .

The whole spectrum of mental health issues and disorders is enormous. Some disorders may contribute towards a more solitary lifestyle, others to having less inhibition than general. Obviously there are some that may result in people being able to sustain superficial relationships more easily than those that are deep and loving. So, there are some elements of mental health problems that could tend towards supporting some of these people into more casual sexual connections than permanent relationships.

However, the swinging group has many people involved in very committed relationships, though they have more open sexual interests than many others, so this contradicts this.

One of the things that does happen in fringe groups is that people who don't fit in so well in mainstream society may feel more comfortable and accepted. This tendency may result in those with some more visible mental health problems becoming apparent to others. However, it's important to understand that most of us wouldn't be able to tell someone with such problems from the next guy on the street. It's not a them and us, it's a big 'us', we're all in this together.

Overall, I'd suggest looking around for psychological research that supports your theories, as one person's gut feel is likely a bit too biased a basis.

I've worked in mental health a long time and I dont think having a mental health condition makes people hypersexual. I actually think it's the opposite, many people who, for example, are depressed and anxious lose their libido and cant be bothered or are just too tired.

Other drugs can knock you out as well, and there are some drugs which means the 'little fellow' wont stand to attention.

You of course get people who can go manic but that doesnt mean they automatically turn to sex, many people go and spend money like water. It's all personal.

Oh having schizophrenia doesnt mean you have a split personality

Some very reasoned posts with excellent content, thanks folks.

Think my main point has been somewhat lost/diluted though unfortunately. Out of all of the people that I personally have met from this site and others like it, and believe me I'm talking quite a lot of people here, almost every single one of them is either being treated for mental health issues or work in mental health.

Obviously this says a lot more about me than the general swinging population but was just wondering if anyone else with similar issues had repeatedly come across the same type of thing, that's all.

I know quite a few mental health nurses, i know a cba therapist, but i also know nurses, policeman, IT workers. There was and still is one profession that i seem to attract that i have definetaly had higher than average contact with although its not mental health. I think its just coincidence to be honest, also you are more likely to remember mental health workers because of how it affects you but might not even realize how many IT workers ect that you meet

Yes but you're talking about you there. I'm not asking people for their personal experiences in general, as this is irrelevant to my original question.

THe stats on MH is that 1 in 4 adults has some form of MH condition; many are not severe and most people are quite able to live normal lives, including hose that need medication. MH includes diagnoses such as ADHD, depression, OCD and Aspergers and there are people with those in all walks of life including a swing site. And why ever not?

It becomes problematic when there is a MH condition that is out of control...

Sorry, have just realised that you were referring to my original post and I was talking about my post further down where I stated that at least 75% of the people that I've met fit this criteria.

This then throws out a massive disproportion to the general 25% of the population example too.
