I've got to be honest, it's never happened to me.

But to be fair, it's just someone trying to be friendly - they're not to know what names people like or dislike. I have seen some people mention any particular dislikes in their profile, I don't think I could get that wound up about it personally!

We only use pet-names once we have established a rapport with someone and only then after checking first, including finding out of there are any they don't like.

Otherwise we just use their profile name or ask what they like to be called.

I had a female colleague who used to call me sweetcheeks!

Being straight it really weirded me out as I thought she was hitting on me. I just ignored it, (but cringed inwardly every time she said it) after time & getting to know her, I found it was just her way of being pleasant & she meant nothing by it!

Also lots of the older generation tend to use the word Love when addressing people. "That's o.k. love" "thank you love" "have a good day love" etc. As that was a common way of speaking to their acquaintances in their youth. Just a generational thing.

I use pet names a lot just the way I was brought up. It's terms of endearment which I think are sweet. Though in an initial message can be a bit over familiar, but I do understand when you don't know a person's real name it's natural to want to use something other than a random letter and number

It’s a certain kind of person that does that, which says something about them in the first place. Tbh, I would never dream of doing that. To me, it’s corny at best, crass at worst ...
