Car sale scam

Ive received a phone call out the blue tonight, from a guy claiming to be the previous owner of a car i bought from a second hand dealer about a month ago.

The caller described the car and its colour, and said he wanted to ask me something about the car. .

Should i ignore it or is it worth reporting it to the cops? If he got my phone number, could he get my address too?

Sounds dodgy to me. What is the dealer doing giving out your details to a previous owner?. I'd contact the dealer first and find out what's going on.

I thought the dealer as no one else has a record of my number linking to the car

Contact the police.

The dealer shouldn't have given out any of your details.

Why would the previous owner have a question about a car he owned before you, unless it is to ask about the kilo of cocain hidden in the spare wheel.

It's fishy.

How can a previous owner have your details.

I think it's the dealer.

Just ignore it. I doubt the police will have any interest at this point.

What did you do/say ? Did you entertain his question ?

Firstly I would ask how he got your phone number the car dealership shouldn’t of given it out it’s against the law then ask him what it is where it is and can you get it for him and post it and he pay the posting. If he can’t answer any of those questions he’s dodgy and inform the police

No, i bought the car outright from dealer, I ran a finance check on the car beforehand

The only way he got my number is via the dealer as he was the only one i gave my number to.

I called the police and they'll be calling me tomorrow morning.

Im not going to get much sleep tonight!, im hoping he hadn't got my address

Could be but I doubt it. He said he wanted to ask me something about the car, not I've got something from it

Anything like this is unsettling isn't it.

I'd say don't call back, you'll be confirming that he has the correct number for a start. I think it's unlikely the dealer gave your number out and it's far more likely that it's either the dealer himself or someone who works for him.

You did the right thing contacting the police there are too many scammers about. If it turns out to be innocent there's no harm done but sadly nowadays you can't take any unsolicited contact at face value

I've had this with someone who was wanting to buy a car I previously owned. He wanted information on the condition of it. It's most likely he's wanting to speak to you for the same reason. Find out what it's about first before you jump to conclusions and waste police time

The person who phoned is claiming to be the previous owner. I can't see any possible question he'd want to ask that he couldn't have just said in his message

Speak to him and see what he wants as it's most likely about the car is the point I'm trying to make. It could be outstanding debt on the car etc

"Have you heard anything op?"

Hi yes, I called the police last night and was told a pc would ring me today.

She thought it odd that the caller had my phone number.

She checked the car's history, and the phone number the guy left me mobile (he rang number witheld)

He asked me to call back and to ask for his name

The pc rang the number, and apparently, an elderly guy answered who'd never heard of "Vladimir",

The PC left her phone and pc number in case this Vladimir guy calls back.

He had a creepy russian/ east voice. I wasn't sure if I was going to take a baseball bat to bed with me or a fuckin string of garlic lol., im still on my toes locking doors. A locksmith i know volunteered to delete any old keys so the car won't start if used

Very odd.

It might turn out to be nothing more than a strange prank.

I'm very suspicious of anything like this we're currently sorting out the fall out from my parents being scammed for a second time. I trust no one who contacts me cold.
