Sometimes word nice irks me. I don't know why. "Be nice!" - it feels strangely deep down, somewhat like "behave".

No! God no. You didn't. I was just sharing something "nice" related.

Your philosophy of starting with yourself is admirable.

It seems disingenuous to me.. Like being nice is something you do for appearances..

Can't we just be the best version of ourselves that we can be, leaving everything and everyone we touch in a better place /state

I know I'm an optimistic dreamer.. But each of us powers and turns the world into a better or worse place... Choices +actions

Yes, I agree with this. Be nice is such a tired, old cliche that's spouted far too often. Being true to you and yet not a dick is far more important and less Hallmark card.

Exactly.. And what you do behind closed doors with no eyes on you to witness is far more important

Lololol we can't even be nice these days without folk telling us nice isn't really nice . I guess it's a sign of the strange times we're in!

Nice thread fella

(isn't there a mod with the name nice? )

I was meaning learning from the mistakes made in the past and correcting. Wouldn’t that be nice ?

Self awareness and improvement is always good ... Not necessarily nice

I’ll stick with women that are kind, generous, thoughtful, compassionate, authentic, they don't need to be nice. My old boss had no manners whatsoever, very little patience and would swear constantly but commanded huge loyalty, she would always leave a generous tip and help anyone who asked.

La la land

I use the word nice quite a lot to be honest. I know it's been overused especially with #benice in often dubious ways. But what is wrong with saying have a nice day? Or like my mamgu used to say let's go have a nice cup of tea. It's a reassuring word, ok it's not one to set the world alright but it conveys a lot of meaning when used with thought.

I think all those qualities you just mentioned are nice. So in my mind what you just said was that to like nice women and your old boss was nice. Nice doesn't have to be insincere does it?

Okehampton

Five hundred years ago, when nice was first used in English, it meant "foolish or stupid."

This is not as surprising as it may seem, since it came through early French from the Latin nescius, meaning "ignorant."

By the 16th century, the sense of being "very particular" or "finicky" had developed. In the 19th century, nice came to mean "pleasant or agreeable" and then "respectable," a sense quite unlike its original meaning.

So at any one point in time nice has meant

Stupid

Correct or accurate

Pleasant.

I am none of the above, so I am not nice.

The way in which you've used nice, as in to describe a cup of tea, exchanging pleasantries... that's not quite the nice referenced above by Midnight, myself etc. That nice is the one that falls more into the #benice trend.

shits creek

I think there's a world of difference between being nice and being kind.

I wouldn't want someone to be nice to me to save my immediate feelings.

I would want someone to be kind to me and tell me something I didn't wanna hear to save my long term feelings/actions/health. Kindness can be awkward as fuck sometimes and take some trepidation and actually a risk.

So, yeah, nice had it's place, I think that's basic manners more than a behaviour you should necessarily need to think about.

Ha, I like how the love heart replaces the rainbow. Nice work.

I think the nice the OP is referring to is a softcore version of the "be nice" tribe found on here.

It's a sweet sentiment and if it helps him improve and feel happier in himself, that's great. Genuinely, no sarcasm meant there.

I do agree with Midnight though - the world needs people trying to be the best person of themselves (or a better one ) they can be. I'd much rather have someone be kind than nice. Perhaps it comes down to semantics and subjective interpretation of "nice" but give me thoughtful, people trying to improve or just not being a dick.

Ditto to that. You're on the right track OP and in my opinion you seem very considerate and genuine. Keep up the good work

I've never seen the word nice disected so clumsily. People regularly contributing on the the "say something nice" threads would probably be appalled I'm sure

Have you grown tired of typing if people have a different interpretation of the word they are dissecting it clumsily?

Perhaps I'm cynical yes. I'm also aware that language can convey so many different things to people - the OP probably meant well and it was a sweet and harmless thread that's been taken over by the cynical amongst us. Sorry OP! Learning and growing is important and good and if that helps you be better, all for it.

I'm not sorry for having a different view of the word I've typed too many times though.

It's nice to be nice sometimes but people can take advantage of it too, I'll just stick to being a bitch. It makes my friends laugh and stops the ones with an agenda getting their own way

Certainly there are lot of perspectives. Thanks all for that. Being a dick/bitch ; I have been there for sometimes like more self centred but later it’s only sharing makes happy. I am now being aware that not everyone is on same page and happy to agree to disagree. Everyone have come up with their own experience and perspectives definitely none can match with others.
