" They all looked pretty young to me. The tube trains looked like a rave had just finished. Till I realised they were all wearing X t shirts. | |||

The question you should be asking is why aren’t non-white lower class people attracted to extinction rebellion or the causes they fight for? Are they too busy dealing with racial issues and making ends meet or is there another reason?" Because by and large they have no “skin in the game” they don’t own a horse, paddleboard, velocipede or hiking socks or they have very limited access to the very thing (the environment) they are being asked to care about, it is abstract to them. Whether limited/no access to the environment is because of systemic/institutional racism or cultural preference is a matter for debate, many ethnic minorities live in large sprawling urban areas as that is where previous generations had to live to earn a wage and put food on the table. This is of course a generalisation, but I think it is fair to say that most young people (regardless of colour) growing up in challenging urban communities have very little affinity to the environment. That isn’t their fault, that is societies fault. | |||

" If that was aimed at me I apologise if I caused offence, it was not my intention to belittle or marginalise, it is challenging to know how to discuss different racial groups without causing offence and I am always willing to learn to better articulate myself. I genuinely believe that for people to value something they have to see the value or benefit for them (regardless of colour or background) on a real and practical level and I think that people (again regardless of ethnicity) who grow up in deprived areas with limited access to the environment and its services struggle to see the individual value. Again it’s a generalisation, but I grew up in the city, in a deprived area and I never really consider the benefits of the environment outside of that urban space, experience and (obviously) moving have helped me understand what is “in it for me” but I have been lucky. | |||

" Those comments about diversity come from within the organisation.. I don't think that it is about discrediting them but growing their membership.. they mention white privilege as a factor... Now I am not the sharpest pencil in the case but that goes over my head... | |||

" I’m not sure why you’d think it was aimed at you? It wasn’t at all. :D In recent times the media especially tend to treat us like we aren’t human, like we need “special” things or “special” safe spaces. It doesn’t help, it’s patronising, offensive and upsetting. I was commenting as a whole as I’m sick of the news being about race! I’m also sick of reading and seeing straight white males being bashed all the time for daring to exist.

I should’ve made it more clear I guess! "It’s cool honestly, I was mortified to think I had offended anyone, I stand corrected. I truly believe that “valuation of the environment” is not a race issue but an access issue. I grew up with a row of brick garages as a view, I never felt remotely “connected” to the environment. Of course like all kids I loved nature programmes and seeing the wider world on TV, but was often baffled why people far away cutting down rainforest affected me. Education happens and we learn that we are all part of a system, that what we consume in one place has often led to the destruction of another. I think if XR what to “diversify” then they must first understand the barriers within their social grouping. I find them dictatorial, belligerent and often times, as individuals, unaffected by the very real challenges that “normal” people face on a daily basis. It’s very hard to care about the future of the planet when you are hyper aware of feeding your kids, paying your bills and just getting through the day. | |||
