Peanut butter ethics

Some brands of peanut butter are made by killing orangutans, apparently, and while I'm not particularly friends with any actual rangas I think causing their death is a bit strong.

Currently I have a jar of Heart and Soul which means well, but it's gloopy and unsatisfying like every other "ethical" brand I've tried.

This leaves me with; stop eating peanut butter or go back to murdering orangutans.

Unless you know a better brand?

There and to the left a bit

Anything that is made using palm oil effectively threatens the natural habitat of our cousins the orangutans - chocolate is one of the biggest users of it and most brands use it, Cadbury's certainly do

Fortunately I'm no fan of chocolate. Peanut butter is a staple tho.

Google seems to have a few peanut butters that don't use palm oil, but whether you can get them easily in the UK is another question. I would imagine they would be more expensive, but that's understandable I guess.

This was the one I tried first and I didn't like it as much as the ranga killing brands. Tbf it is better than the current gloop.

My favourite is Meridian peanut butter - it’s made from 100% peanuts, no added oil, sugar, salt etc. and you can buy it in most supermarkets, so it's easy to get hold of.

I've not tried it, but how tricky is it to make your own?

Sacks of peanuts from a wholesaler, roasted in the oven; blitzed in a blender; add salt, and stir in vegetable oil.

I've make cashew nut butter, and that was basically the same.

Cuts out palm oil problems and you can customise your blend. A bit of paprika maybe. Or nutmeg. Maybe ground ginger.

Buy some peanuts*. Put in a food processor. Turn it on and wait a bit. You'll soon have peanut butter.

There are a few brands on the market that are just peanuts, most have oils, sugars and other nasties in them.

I'm really big on ethical shopping and what I call, food security. I spend ages looking for non palm oil products - then when I'm happily settled with something, I find they change the ingredients and Bam! palm oil is now listed on the ingredients

I used to buy organic Whole Earth peanut butter, but I haven't bought any in ages - it apparently now contains 'sustainable palm oil' which is bullshit in my eyes, so I can't help you, OP, sorry.

My diet doesn't include stuff like that anymore but yep, making decent peanut butter exactly the way I like it at a fraction of the cost that involves nothing more than putting the blender in the dishwasher afterwards is a no brainer.

There are a few brands on the market that are just pure nut but most are full of processed oils and sugar. Last time I looked the gack that is Skippy was about 70% nut and even the Whole Earth brand wasnt just nut.

It's not. They keep the peanut oil in in instead of taking it out and replacing it with a different one. A good nut butter will have a layer of nut oil on the top that you simply have to stir in.

Honest, all you have to do is Google, there are so many brands out there that are just nut.

Sun pat peanut butter is palm oil free.

I have noticed over the last few years there has been a massive shift in using r*pe seed and sunflower oil instead of palm oil in noodles, bread and biscuits. Not sure it's conscious ethical reasons as they would of promoted it, it's probably just cost and availability.

I'm always alittle unsure with the sustainable palm oil as I haven't seen different silos that separate the 'sustainable' palm oil. I just do my best not to buy things with palm oil in, the annoying thing is when they change there ingredients! One thing to what is soap, a big user of palm oil.

Palm is pretty damn efficient compared to Rap3seed etc and it can actually be farmed responsibly, it just often isn't because of the lack of legislation in the regions where it's grown. I love Sunpat, but don't like the palm oil issue. But find the alternatives aren't as strong in flavour.

However, we have a refill store near use that does home made peanut butter (as well as hummus, and other but butters), and it is seriously delish! More expensive, but is yummy and know where every ingredient comes from.

And can palm not be grown sustainably then?

We did we used to use before palm oil in everything and does everything need so much oil. Bring back butter

*what did

Being back malnutrition and poverty and disease too?

Palm is pretty damn efficient compared to Rap3seed etc and it can actually be farmed responsibly, it just often isn't because of the lack of legislation in the regions where it's grown. People treat it like it's toxic because they're told to on social media and by people like .me. trying to sell them shit at a premium price to use in their comfortable UK lifestyles, but they really should be wiser x"

We do eat an awful lot of stuff we really dont need to though don't we, with no need to starve or be malnourished, if we didnt have such a ridiculous choice of food and whatever else is filled with palm oil. I am all about the small sustainable farming though, this global nonsense doesnt wash with me. Still send me the spice boats over though

I watched a documentary about cinnamon (I know right, fucking rock n roll round here) and this guy and his family tended a crop that produced a bundle of 3' long sticks that stooped the bloke as hw carried it on his back. About a barrel in shape.

He went to a dealer who paid him £1 for the lot. One single quid. I ch*ked on my sandwich. Those little £1.50 jars we buy? Would have made 1000s of them. Pay the grower a decent price and I suspect they'll need less land to turn a coin and the wildlife can have a bit of space too.

I'd be happy to pay more too, but someone in the supply chain will pocket that as well no doubt.

This is a ridiculous leap...

All the cheap ones are full of sugar and rubbish anyway.

Meridian... as a start.

Try almond butter... sainsbury do a 100% 1kg tub!

Whole earth do a palm oil free one too. 100% peanuts.

I'm kind of into peanut butter... anyone want to get naked and well...

We're catching you up believe me. Every time a shop closes; what are we gonna get I wonder, a hardware store? A fish mongers? A book shop? Oh look it's another place to have brunch. Great cause we've only got 15 of them to choose from in a half mile radius.

"Does anyone know how to farm another crop to produce the same volumes of oil we require as palm offers?

No experts? "

It's only our desire for unnecessary food and products that drive palm oil production.

Stop eating all processed and 'instant' food, stop using unnecessary washing products, fancy candles and other fancy bollocks that we don't need.

All vegetable oils are PUFA's and toxic to humans anyway, we simply don't need vegetable oil.

We must watch the same sort of programmes. I was watching an old man who climbs a glacier every day to hack at ice to sell to the bars back down in town. They did pay him a good price for it though

"Some brands of peanut butter are made by killing orangutans, apparently, and while I'm not particularly friends with any actual rangas I think causing their death is a bit strong.

Currently I have a jar of Heart and Soul which means well, but it's gloopy and unsatisfying like every other "ethical" brand I've tried.

This leaves me with; stop eating peanut butter or go back to murdering orangutans.

Unless you know a better brand?

Buy some peanuts*. Put in a food processor. Turn it on and wait a bit. You'll soon have peanut butter.

There are a few brands on the market that are just peanuts, most have oils, sugars and other nasties in them.

*other nuts available."

Good shout. Even the so-called healthy brands are processed and full of crap.
