I believe its about a denial. I'm 93 years young because I wish my youth wasn't gone and I'm going to hold to that by convincing myself I'm still young on the inside. Maybe because old has so many negative things attached in one's mind we don't want to accept it as part of us and define it with less fear and doom.

"I was 40 in the first lockdown last year. As I’ve said to you before, it’s all relative. I feel old. I feel robbed of a massive weekend binge drinking in a beach setting with all my mates too but that’s for a different thread. I think a lot of the feeling is that those care free I’ll do it cause I’m gonna live forever type things don’t seem such good ideas anymore. It’s a bit like I was all geared up to have another season chasing eggs this season and now I’m thinking I’ll be at least 41 before I get chance to play again... is that sensible? It really fucking hurt in my 30’s so it might be the breaking of me. I’ve had a real good waffle there. More tea needed now." For a lot of people 40 is a kind of line in the sand and does make you think and feel differently about yourself. I felt like that at 50 then again at 60. If I say I'm going to be 65 this year they reply with "age is just a number" or "but you still look good" or as my mum said the other day "but you're a young 64" . I've been sorting out the spare room, and my ice hockey kit is in there. As much as I would in my heart absolutely love to get back on the ice again, my brain tells me that's a really dumb thing to think or hope for. In my twenties taking a big hit or fall was bad enough or puck to a bit where there's no padding was excruciating. A really tough game or tournament and I'd be barely able to move for days. I can't imagine doing that now and trying to do my job the next day or for the next week! The whole sensible thing resonates a lot more now. I think it's having the responsibility of the bills being all mine and if I did get injured I'd only have myself to rely on physically and financially. Calculated risks these days. | |||
