....David Beckham, I reckon.

Left out of TeamGB, pivotal role in bringing the Games to London, and he's just announced he will have a 'role' in the opening ceremony.

Well deserved, if it's him. Good luck to him.

Smart money is on Steve Redgrave although Daley (late of Newnham and Essex AC) may be a dark horse...

Locog seem keen to have sporting stars from around the world taking part in the Torch Relay. Its a long shot but The One show did mention Mohammed Ali will be at the opening Ceremony. I know he's not British but he is someone who has shown the Olympic spirit, and is a former Olympian.

because she is a paralympian, and rightly proud of the fact. i would imagine that she would want to open the event that she has achieved so much in.

I'm not saying that she shouldnt light the olympic flame. The paralympics deserve as much hoo haa made of them as the olympics and having such a high profile person as Tanni opening them would elevate their standing

hopefully not beckham , if people think he was pivotal in helping to bring the olympics to london then how come we haven't shot him as we lost out in bringing the world cup here and he had a pivotal role on that committee , he's so proud of being british that he plays his sport in another country and even lives in another country , it should be SIR STEVE REDGRAVE , 5 OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALS IN 5 DIFFERENT OLYMPICS

Muhammed Ali never won a gold medal in any Olympics. Cassius Clay did however.

Definately won't be Beckham, he's already said that it won't be him lighting the flame and that he believed it should be an Olympian, though he has said yesterday that he has a role in the Opening Ceremony. It definately won't be Ali, partly because he's already lit the flame with very shaky hands in Atlanta in 96, but also because he's American and surely the honour of carrying the flame anywhere inside the stadium and definately in lighting the flame will be given to a British person.

I hope it isn't Princess Anne, who is an Olympian and was involved heavily in winning the games for London, but it wouldn't quite seem right for it to be bestowed onto a Royal.

At the outset I hoped it would be Steve Redgrave, but as he's already carried the flame I don't think that honour should be granted twice.

It may well be Dorothy Tyler-Odam who won silver for GB in 1936 and 1948 games, the only person to have won medals before and after WW2, but there's also Steve Ovett who I haven't heard having any involvement in the torch relay so far.

well running competitor rather than mate, there was always an edge to it.

Coe was expected to win gold in Moscow in the 800m I think and ovett won it from him, but a few days later Coe beat Ovet to gold for the 1500m, (the events may be the wrong way round)

Interesting thoughts on that last 4, which would be track, field, rowing rowing. Maybe they will broaden that out to include some of the other diciplines like cycling (Chris Boardman) Swimming (Duncan Goodhew) and maybe even boxing and yachting too, not necasarilly as the last 4 but as part of the final journey of the torch

That was my thoughts, maybe the youngest competitor and roger banister, that would be nice. I think its going t be something special, so they have to come up with something. Dont think it will be bradley cause he only won this week and they will have organized it weeks ago

nothing has been finalise yet,

the decision is a joint one beteween the IOC and the British Olympic Organisers.

no decision will be made until Friday.

I understand their is a short list of between 5 and 20 people and as yet there is disagreement amongst them.

we will have to wait and see.

I hate to say it but that tory nob Coe deserves it as much as anyone, he was one of britains greates ever olympians, holding one world record for 24 years. and was a major part in the planning and the bid for london 2012.

The mischievous side of me would give it to aaron cook, he was robbed of a silver the last olympics so its one in the eye for the biased chinese judges and hes been robbed of a starting place this year despite being world no 1,cos he chose to pay for his own training knowing that the british team training was crap, that would be a dig at the corruption in our selection criteria of course thats never gonna happen but i like the idea.

Boris has an official role, as does Seb and it would be odd for them to do it. But if you are going for the Mayor then perhaps it should be Ken, as the Mayor who won the bid? (not sure what that smiley means but it's the sort of face I pull whenever I see Ken).

The Olympic motto is that it's not about winning but the taking part that counts.

I think roger bannister and that really young diver as an ode to young and old... Like the passing of the torch literally.

Well, it won't be Pinsett as he's the last torchbearer tomorrow, and I think it won't be Redgrave as he's said publicly that he'd love to do it and if you knew you were going to and it was supposed to be a closely kept secret you wouldn't say something like that would you.

I'm still of a mind that Beckham will do it, but it could be Sir Roger Bannister (but as he's like a million years old Beckham might have to steady his hand).

So there you go, Beckham & Bannister, sounds like a firm of solicitors.
