and when is a compliment actually not a compliment - is it about misunderstanding between people?

When youre not familiar with the person and the compliment is personal then the person gets cross you didnt accept their compliment. I dislike those situations.

Ive complimented strangers before: nice hair, clothes, shoes but thats as far as it goes.

I agree - but what if they compliment me for example on my bum (they do not lol) and I personally hate it (I do not either) but just as an example.

A positivity recognised by someone about you & told to you without the need of any gain from it ....

The ultimate compliment has to be “I love you”, which means I accept you, despite your faults and failings, which we all have.

I was just thinking of that yesterday.. when people chose to compliment and on what. How do you make your compliment stand out in a flood of similar ones.. and do you actually need to make it different or just the gesture matters. Just in relation to fab. Not life outside.

I've done this...complicated a stranger on a really great outfit..it has been met with positivity.

I think misunderstandings can be cleared up quickly if people actually take the time to listen to each other. Usually we make a snap judgment there and then and still let it linger even if the misunderstanding has been resolved.

That’s still a compliment ... regardless if you like the subject of the compliment or not

So what drives us to give us to pay compliments?

La la land

When it feels it's personal to you. It's easy to say "you're beautiful" and it's kinda meh, but saying "I love the way the light bounces off your hair" feels more personal. But also depends who is saying it also. Even something that sounds like an insult can be a compliment from the right person

A good compliment for me is one that is passed with no agenda or obvious thought of reward.

I think in a group of close friends it's kind of like passing on positive vibes. Like your mate will give you a compliment and big you up when you're having a shitty day and you'll do the same when they need it. So you all end up boosting each others confidence.

From people who want to get into your knickers? Exactly that

Isn't it just when you want to let someone know there's something about them that you really like? Pretty simple in terms of what's good and what drives it imo

Compliments off a stranger is always a nice thing 4 me personally. It could b off a man or women as long as its heart felt and genuine

I think comparisons and mentioning other profiles forces things into the “not a compliment” category. It’s something I’ve noticed to be common in first messages and it kinda turns my stomach to read.

Like, you can say I look good without needing to demean or diss the bodies of anyone else on here. We all look darn good in our own unique and beautiful ways.

I have had compliments for something like an outfit of a stranger....they have not asked for and I've never seen them again...it felt good.

And..I have also given them.

I think it's particularly nice when it's a woman paying the compliment with no ulterior motive.

Just one woman to another being appreciative.

There and to the left a bit

On here, I think most "general" compliments can be taken with a huge pinch of salt - and by "general" I mean those non-personal ones that could be said to anyone and have little meaning but plenty of expectation.

The ones that mean the most are the personal ones, that are heartfelt and come without an agenda or expectation and more importantly are delivered naturally and without forethought (which obviously as the recipient it's not always easy to tell).

I think compliments on here as a means of initial engagement with someone demonstrate awkward social skills

On Fab I really don’t know how best to pay a compliment as a man to a woman because of understandable scepticism or indifference. I try to avoid it in opening messages, and on the forum, for this reason.

In real life the compliment takes place in a real life context with body language, tone of voice, etc all giving the other person positive or negative signals. I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad reaction to a compliment in real life, perhaps embarrassment at worse.

Then again in real life I’ve never complimented a complete stranger on their naked body which I guess is commonplace here.
