Motorways without hard shoulders ease some congestion but with no hard shoulder there have been lots of deaths.. should they be banned..? I broke down on one with nowhere to go. No safe area to pull over.

Yes they should be banned. Motorways should always have a hard shoulder available. It's a death trap without one.

Yes defo very dangerous by the time you are spotted and the lane is closed the ones who miss the warning are on the lane mostly lorries.

very concerning, I had to pullover once with an issue with the car and a few weeks later got a warning letter from highways agency for obstruction of a live lane WTF

The theory is: If you break down, the section of road you are on closes your lane to effectively "recreate" the hard shoulder when required.

In practice though, it doesn't seem to be working. I personally am not a fan.

The motorways arent the problem the drivers not concentrating or obeying the matrix are.

Drivers should also learn how to vacate themselves and their passengers quickly and get the hell away.

Dual carriageway are far more unpredictable but they've never had a hard shoulder.

I've seen numerous programs on tv about horrific accidents involving cars having been broken down, hard shoulder or not, even Traffic Police with their blue lights flashing do not seem to be immune from this unfortunately

It’s not that much different to breaking down on a hard shoulder - you shouldn’t stay in the car there either.

However I think they should have addressed the cause of congestion differently, given people £5 a mile if they drive in the correct lane and fine them £1000 a mile for being in the wrong lane.

All that happens with 4 lanes is that there are two empty lanes on the left instead of one

The amount of drivers that I see driving along the hard shoulder when the red “x” is above the lane suggests that people don’t understand the rules of smart motorways.

I am not a fan, in fact when they were first proposed I thought that people would lose lives as a result. I never use the hard shoulder on a smart motorway, even if it’s allowed.

Smart motorways do work. More like people not paying attention whilst driving. Drivers nowadays nolonger forward think whilst driving.

How do you vacate yourself and quickly get away as a wheelchair user? I have to use crutches to go to the boot, pull out my chair, erect the back, apply the seat cushion, put my crutches in the boot and then I can move.

On an old fashioned motorway, I could probably launch myself over the barrier and sit in a puddle until rescued but that's not an option on a smart motorway, unless right by a layby. Also I often have a small child in the car with me. With a hard shoulder, although advice is to evacuate PDQ, at least its safer being stuck in a non live lane than a live one.

Appalling idea right from the outset. They're highly dangerous not only for road users who find themselves in difficulties but for the emergency services who no longer have the hard shoulder to faciliate emergency access.

As an HGV driver, we use the M6 travelling between Scotland and England on a nightly basis, i had the misfortune to encounter a broken down car in the roadwork section of the motorway, it had no light on and luckily the lane beside me was empty and i managed to swerve at the last minute, thus avoiding any contact, but if that lane beside me had not been empty i dread to imagine what the consequences might have been, I also have seen many broken down vehicles on the northbound section in lane 1 with people walking about around the car, it's not smart motorways we need, but SMARTER DRIVERS.

100 percent agree. Very few workplaces are as dangerous as a hard shoulder as it is.

Without a hard shoulder we are going to see more blue lives being sacrificed.

It took 4 years of absolute misery on the Greater Manchester road network to convert 17 miles of the M60 to smart motorway. Does anyone think the powers that be will convert it back again? They're still pressing on with doing the M62 from the M602 out towards Warrington
