A london taxi driver locked his taxi on tower bridge and jumped into the Thames in a protest over access to the Olympic lanes

He was later arrested

I used to drive into London every day to work and a 50 mile trip from Bedfordshire to Lewisham used to take up to 3 hours in the morning. I'm so glad I live 350 miles away from the place now and wild horses couldn't drag me to see an Olympic event. I'll be glad when it's all over.

For those interested, TFL chief Peter Hendy has been quoted as saying that greedy cab drivers can go and work at the airport if they don't like it in London during the Olympics. On a recent arrival into Heathrow, representatives from the HEX the Heathrow express are touting passengers before they collect their luggage and telling them that the taxis will take over two hours because of traffic and charge over £100. My driver had been waiting over six hours for a job, between two and three times the normal waiting time. This was on heathrows busiest ever day for arriving passengers As I understand it, once a taxi is in the system they are unable to leave the park forcing drivers to wait an unfeasably long time. The Olympic contract does stipulate dedicated lanes to ensure athletes and officials can get to venues in good time. This was after the disasters in Atlanta when chaos ensued and competitors missed events. The last Olympics in Beijing allowed the 60,000 taxis to use the dedicated Olympic lanes.

Londons taxi fleet is the finest most respected and most regulated in the world and revered everywhere. Customers sometimes comment on Taxi fares being expensive. The taxis themselves can cost up to almost £50,000 and are expensive to run. The fares reflect this. Taxi drivers have no say into setting the tarrif. London does not have the most expensive fares in the country

I think it was silly thing to do, I'm all for peaceful protests and yeah they may well be out of pocket but what no one has mentioned is how dangerous it was, without sounding geeky (I hope!) The Thames has very powerful undercurrents, fast tides and heavy traffic. Not worth risking your life for

Never seen a poor cabbie, they'll survive. Besides, fuckers don't like to go south of the river so don't see their problem.

Should explain I loathe cabbies. I always arrange for my local minicab company to pic me up from town as I've never been able to get a black cab to take me home...West Dulwich is hardly the front line!

Didn't realise I could be so petty and vindictive!

Hope they don't make a bean from the Olympics...wankers!

I live and work on the south circular: eight miles door to door. Rush hour...90 minutes. The torch was in my neck of the woods yesterday...didn't go and look.

Only "exciting" thing is my daughter works at the university the Jamaican team train and she has a lovely picture of herself with Usain Bolt.

I'm a cabbie ... Let me tell you the lanes are a nightmare, today it took me half hour to do a 5 minute run through Knightsbridge & that's before the lanes open. People won't & aren't taking cabs in this traffic, you two don't know what your talking about

Its total chaos in London at the moment,its taking 3 or 4 times as long to get anywhere and I really don't see an issue with the cabs using the Olympic lanes if it allows traffic to flow a bit better

Its a bloody shambles as it is at the moment

Two weeks ago the London Port Authority enforced a law making it an offence to swim in the Thames, for Health and Safety reasons...

I work for one of the emergency services in London and the amount of person in the river calls we get its ridiculous, ok some are through suicide attempt but mainly through stupidity I don't think they realise just how dangerous it is, added to that it's a wastes of resources when particular services have to fish them out. I'm digressing slightly but all I'm saying is that there could probably have been a better way to get his point across

On a brighter note, I noticed on Sunday that the shops were open for an extra 2 hours to cope with all this money the Olympic tourists are bringing to the UK.

Living in Wirral, Merseyside, approx 240 miles from London, I have to say that I didn't notice any coachloads of tourists having travelled from Heathrow to Merseyside to come and spend their money in our local shops, thus requiring those extra 2 hours of trade. Maybe it was because it was a week before The Games start, so clearly it will be this Sunday when the M53 will be blocked with the tourist coaches....
