If you feed your dogs pedigree or chappie dry dog food please check the trading standards website. Toxic dog food in both America and now here

So I buy pedigree vital dry dog food for my boys. Because of lockdowns I added a subscribe and save delivery so 12kg bags get delivered.

Only yesterday I got the email telling me it's been recalled by trading standards .

It's left me with a 12kg unopened bag and about 10kgs open (in our dry dog food pot) to dispose of.

Annoyingly we don't have plastic bins. Obviously I don't want to put it out in a black bag and have the local cats and other animals get at it so I'm stuck with it in the pot until next Thursday, I'm hoping the bin men will let me poor it into the lorry.

If you feed your dogs dry dog food. Please do check trading standards UK so you're not feeding your pets toxic food

Not sure if you have access to somewhere you could dig and bury it. It will break down naturally.

Is toxic dog food available to buy because we're no longer in the EU?

couple, us we him her.

I just feed my dog's poor urchins and beggars that hang around the gates to the castle.

When I say I feed them I get the staff to do it.

At least they are fresh

The thing is a dog can handle a lot of toxins that is why they only ever use knacker meat in dog food and not cat food

I’m not sure that’s true - I think cat food gets it too and particularly fish that may not be fit for human consumption. I buy tins of tuna for my cats that has printed on the tin - for pet consumption only.

I understand these dry foods have a higher than normal level of vitamin D. A dog would need to eat a lot over a long period to have any serious effect so the withdrawal is precautionary.

If you left the food out for wild animals (foxes, etc) it would probably be eaten quickly and have no ill effects.

It looks as if some Pedigree products may contain an excess of Vitamin D which can be toxic to dogs if consumed over a prolonged period (the same thing occurs in humans).

The affected product lines are:

The recall affects Pedigree Complete Dry Chicken and Vegetables, Pedigree Mixer, and Chappie products.

The specific items include:

Pedigree Adult Dry Dog Mixer - 3kg

Pedigree Dry Dog Mixer - 10kg

Pedigree Complete Chicken & Veg Dry Dog Food - 12kg

Pedigree Complete Chicken & Veg Adult Dry Dog Food - 2.6kg

Chappie Complete Chicken Dry Dog Food - 3 kg

(Republic of Ireland) Pedigree Complete small dog beef 1.4kg

(Republic of Ireland) Pedigree Complete dry chicken & vegetables E7 2.6kg

Note: only products with certain barcodes are affected.

I'll provide details for checking product barcodes etc. below.

Glad I read this.

I'm just thinking of swapping some of my dogs' wet food for dry.

I've fed my Labrador vital since I got him as a puppy (puppy vital before adult vital) and then put our younger 2nd dog onto the same, it's taken me hours to locate the safe beef pedigree dry food,(with delivery, in bulk) which I've now done

They had actual meat for breakfast so they are not complaining today. Ox heart defrosting for their tea.

I'm more grateful I switched to delivery because if I'd purchased it in a store, I would still be non the wiser

Looking at the batch dates this has been happening for a while
