I can have conversations (to a greater or lesser extent) in two languages other than English.

I'm less proficient in two additional languages.

Spanish well, German and French basic. Was fortunate to learn Spanish while living there for several years, the others I did at school and evening classes.

Don’t be afraid to try different methods, not everything works for everyone. Evening classes (when we can) are a big help. Otherwise try listening or reading the language every day, even if just for a short while - in the background while doing something else, in the car, etc.

Bon chance !

There's a surprising amount of help on YouTube, although I'm wary of the polyglot community.

Apps useful but not by themselves

Oddly, Reddit is useful

Various websites and social apps to connect with native speakers

Is that Brummie? My bf can speak yam yam then! Lol

My mother tongue is Chinese (Hokkien). I had to learn Malay at school but my first language is English.

The only language I've acquired as an adult is BSL... British Sign Language and I'm proficient to level 3. My Deaf friends encourage me to get level 4 and to be an interpreter but it's funny... Once I can communicate in the language, I've kinda lost interest to "learn" it...

I remember my first dream in BSL, it was so weird...

Grew up in SA so Afrikaans and English.

Lived in Paris and tried French... failed.

Lived in Germany and learnt a little German... easier to link to Afrikaans/Dutch in structure vs the Latin origin of French

Also live in Middle East and so know how to swear in Arabic, order tea and say please and thank you....

I have been trying to learn Portuguese. Like all the Latin based languages, the posh words as we would call them are easy to learn as they are entwined in our language. I'm excellent in C, passibly good with C++, can struggle through C#.

Python and Java I've got the basics of, but at BASIC I'm more advanced. When we get to the weirder languages with funny syntax I studied a bit of Lisp, and I did some real work with Forth. APL is all greek to me. In 1978 I was using Fortran IV, by '83 I was using Fortran 77. 1986 to 1990 I was doing all my writing in Coral 66. I tried out Pascal, meh. Occam never really caught on, but good when you want to hold several conversations all at the same time. I can read VHDL but not really my thing for writing. On the other hand, when some Assembly is required I've done the i86, M68000, H8, SH2/3/4, ARM, PDP11, 6502, TMS9900 and Atmel dialects. In the dim and distant past I did a project on F8 while at university. Recently I've started looking at RISC V, but I don't think I'll be using that for another year or two. Last year I found I had to speak some Lua, as a stepping stone towards some work in JSON. And in the summer I needed to use some ASN1 but the support for that also required learning a little F#.

SQL I don't rate as a real language, it's more of a pigin english, and not very expressive at that. ADA - far too verbose. Linda, the other Lovelace - too deep for me.

Anything I've forgotten? Oh, Ratfor, read the book, very archaic now. XML. HTML. Couple of times I've had to make up my own languages for special purposes - well really more like limited vocabulary tiny grammars, but useful enough to get a message across. I'll have a go at most anything though, give me the textbook and a couple of weeks, and I'm usually able to get by...

"Do you speak a second language? If so, when did you learn?

I am trying to learn french, I’m not finding it easy!"

Being half Spanish I also speak French and being a humble builder I struggled unlike the rest of my family.

For the first 8 years here I was only a very very basic speaker mainly chatting badly about football in the builders merchants or them teaching me bad words.

Things changed when we opened a restaurant and now as the French say “I speak French like a Spanish cow”!!!

Op try finding a French speaker to chat to maybe on line as my wife does that for people learning English.

Best of luck.

English as a second language for one of us and speaks German and Italian too as foreign languages. The later you learn in life the harder and nothing can beat total immersion.

Which is trickier when older as commitments/family,etc...

OP if you are serious about learning French, carry on with the apps, etc, get the best basic level you can and when you have holidays, go to France for however long you can (less than 2 weeks wouldn’t make a difference).

While there try to minimise interaction in English.

Probably not enjoyable at first but only way if you want to progress and see a difference

I know how you feel as my wife is fluent and I speak it but when we ended up a few years ago in San Sebastián for a day more by accident then planned we were double fucked as between us we just about hag “hello goodbye and thank you” which we were very embarrassed by but thankfully the head waiter in the hotel spoke French.

We find that here if you make the effort most French are very forgiving!!!

Podcast “coffee break French” is good.

It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!
