Any on here?

If so do you do anything apart from hooves?

Is the job all you expected it to be?

Are anvils still a thing?

Do you have a leather apron?

Asking for a friend

Just to note here a blacksmith does many a job

The reference you have used would be this

farrier not to be confused as a blacksmith even though has been trained in blacksmithing

Most horse owners or previous owners know this

A farrier does horses hooves.

A blacksmith does all sorts of metal work

And yes. Anvils are important, as are leather aprons, especially when half a tonne of horse rips their foot across their nether regions

Rail track or fork lift tines are just as good but anvils are better

So in a Venn diagram the hooves would be in the middle bit?

I don’t do hooves at all

I do a lot of knife making and general forging

It’s a hobby, it’s very difficult to have it as a full time profession

I sometimes wear a leather apron, mainly when I’m doing work on the bench grinder or angle grinder as the sparks burn holes in my clothes

Oh, anvils are still a thing. Modern ones can be very iffy on quality though.

I’ve got two, one from 1897 that weighs around 50kg and the other is around 125kg but unfortunately has the horn missing.

I used to know a lady blacksmith, she had a leather apron. I still have a necklace that she had made and gave to me.

Iron work.

There are other “smiths” ie copper, silver, gold etc.

Do everything except hooves,

Mostly chef and bushcraft knives,

Made an axe head from a draft horseshoe last year if that counts,

Leather apron is a must,

Preferred with a pocket,

And oggghhhhh God yes, Anvils are very much a thing,,

Seriously expensive and hard to get a big Good one,

Tell your friend if she wants any more info, PM me,

Which steel do you use? I’m just using up the last of my 1075+CR, had some great results with it.

Currently got a 1080/15N20 Damascus billet that I’m working into a small bushcraft style knife, going to put a kirinite handle with carbon fibre pins on it.

wow, sounds cracking,

Most of my stuff is O1 tool steel off cuts that I get from a mill down the road

Or Pharma grade stainless I pick up in work from time to time,

And leaf spring as my mates owns a breakers yard,

I'm leaning towards more scandi blades these days so hidden tang, bone, leather, antlers mix,

And stock removal old axes to fit the backpacker remit.

I bought a dog off of a blacksmith once, when I got him home he made a bolt for the door.

I went to Banksy's Dismaland some years ago, and one of the many amusing "funfair" stands was Topple the Anvil, I believe devised by David Shrigley. Exactly as it sounds: if you could knock the anvil over with the three tennis balls, you could take it away with you...

Mainly iron, but I also meant as in gates, axes, light fittings, all sorts.

I’ve used spring steel with only around 30% success, after heat treatment they snap, for the effort put in it’s easier just to buy quality stuff for knives.

I have made a few punches and drifts from springs though, they work pretty well though.
