Decided to buy some raw (jute) rope and treat it from scratch, including colouring it. This got me thinking about colours.

What colours do you think look best? Subjective, I know, but I’d be interested in your thoughts....

Gapping Fanny

I like natural colours, but the ropes we tend to use are unicorn (i.e.: multi coloured) as for some we tie that is just as appealing as the ties we do, so we are not doing sadistic rope or worried about the texture against skin.

You mean material wise such as hemp, jute, cotton or getting climbing or marine rope?

The main thing I would say is what do you want to do with it?

If you want to tie on the ground, then material and thickness are decided factors for me.

If you want to suspend then you need to know the tensile strength of the rope and its load baring capability otherwise you may have accidents. This is where I would not be buying rope from lovehoney or bondara, and would instead buy from a specialist retailer.

Each to their own though. Its about confidence and ability more than anything as rope can be dangerous in the wrong hands.

Thanks. That’s really helpful. I’m technically minded so the technical side of things should be a walk in the park. I’m also making sure I have a solid understanding of the anatomical aspects, because as you say in the wrong hands, they’re dangerous. My plan is to work up to suspensions, but for now I’m at a relatively early stage in my journey.

For my then play partner, when the first lockdown was lifted I wanted to have a set of ropes dedicated for her. I bought jute and because she is BAME with dark honey skin tone I dyed the ropes royal blue as I thought it would look good on her.

I have plain ropes and purple ropes and I have jute, cotton, nylon (gold colour), hempex and coconut rope.

As fet couple has (as usual) done the heavy lifting I would only add the following gloss.

The big issue about suspending with hemp or jute is that it is unrated and it has many variables. Therefore if you are trained in doing suspension only buy from the number of rope sellers that sell suspension worthy natural rope. There are estimates on the scene of the breaking point of natural rope.

The synthetic ropes are now being recommended for suspension as these tend to be rated. Some can be bought with a reinforced core. But you have to learn how to use synthetic ropes for suspension because they don't have the grip of natural rope. It is a different technique from natural rope.

Some natural rope now has a reinforced core.

I am old school and love the Japanese rope style so I mainly use jute.

However, I use hempex and nylon rope for club use because they can be washed without the hassle of re-stretching them again.

My main set of rope is a deep burgundy colour and was dyed to match my car because I loved the colour so much

I also have a set of natural coloured rope which is a nice contrast. I’ve seen someone colour theirs a beautiful emerald colour and that was so unusual but lush. Black rope can be sexy but if the person has black on underneath it loses its effect. Naked is fine though

Yes I agree - I use red silk rope, so much kinder if you have very sensitive skin.
