Epsom

I have questions:

1. How does one get into hiking? Love to go on walks around the countryside alas have no one to go with.

2. Can I go alone? Will I be safe? Or will the Surrey wildlife jump out and eat me?

3. Best rucksack for a days walk/hike something to keep my spare layer waterproof lunch and a camel pack in. Oh and waterproof sod carrying a cover!

4. Any good walk/hike books recommendations on Surrey?

5. If anyone knows of a hiking/walking/rambling club thing let me know

And any other tips suggestions appreciated, I do have boots.

Get an app called ‘AllTrails’

It’ll show you all local walks, rides, and runs near you. It’s pretty clever

Might be able to source a local walking group on Facebook

There is one near me but it’s not a formal walking group just one suggesting nice walks and some women arrange to meet up for walks

There will be local walking groups in your area. Have a look on social media sites and Google walking groups.

Just do it, OP!

I walk alone usually; it'sperfectly safe! Let someone know where you're going and the time you expect to be back. Make sure you you're comfortable with where... (ie, if you can't mapread, stay off high/remote routes and stick to lowland, well signposted ways). Join Facebook walking groups, check online for local groups you can join for a walk when we're able.

25l sac is plenty for a day walk. Try boots on a proper outdoor shop, they'll give you good advice.

If you get a decent ordnance survey map , it will show you all the walking paths in your area , or even try a google search

I buy regatta outdoor clothing for walking they have a good range of outdoor waterproof clothing for men and women also boots and sticks , try the retailer called (go outdoors )

You can walk alone! I found leather boots are better as they’re more durable, any bag aslong as it’s waterproof! Take your mobile and youll be safe, a lot of people don’t know you can call 999 in an emergency with no service! It will still ring. Ordinate survey maps are good or download an app on your phone if you’re that way inclined. Just have fun and explore! X

I got chatting to a lady on here during the first lockdown. We are now walking buddies and have had various days out to the Yorkshire Dales. You may find someone on here OP.

Another way is to get the Meet Up app. A great place to find people in your area that have the same interests as you

Thank you everyone, I managed to get motivated and go for a walk, managed to walk 3.6 miles

I shall look into surrey ramblers and try and get out there more

Go alone! I do, (with my dog) or I take the kids with me. We don’t go on loooong hikes though, just local forestry parks or nature reserves where we can follows path/route as I have a terrible sense of direction.

A packed lunch, plenty of fluid, energy bar and good hiking boots, wet weather stuff and tell someone roughly where you are going in case of emergency.

Look for local rambling groups too, they will know lots of great route. Local councils sometimes have walking route maps on website (or they do here anyway).
