Just had a text from GOV-UK to say they are giving everyone £358.76. It then leads you to a website that looks like GOV.UK, asking for your bank details...note it says GOV-UK and not GOV.UK

There's one from HMRC going round as well - it's a phone call and they tell you you're going to be arrested if you don't send them some money.

Happened to a friend of mine a few days ago.

In the unlikely circumstance of the Government deciding to give everyone in the country £350 I think it would be considered newsworthy and we would all know about it well in advance of getting a text.

As the saying goes, if it seems to good to be true, it probably is.

Report text scams to your network. Do a search and find out how to forward it to them. They can then take steps to prevent it continuing.

You can flag them to the government and forward them on, then delete the Mail.

Unfortunately if it’s a programme that sends these mails, recognises that the email was opened, you can then be targeted again. If you ignore them and delete without opening you can minimise your chances of getting more in the future.

But we’ll done for spotting them, also keep an eye out for text messages as well. Google is definitely your friend before clicking on any links or providing bank details.

Send to Action Fraud as they keep a data base and if they get enough evidence can prosecute.

You can forward spam texts to 7726, which sends the text to your network. According to the Ofcom website, the number 7726 is used as using the phone keypad the digits correspond with the word SPAM making the number easy to remember.

Also beware that some messages include a number to call back on for further info. If you call this number you are charged a ridiculously large amount.

Some scams will call and hang up when you answer, when you look at the number and call it back to find out who it is, once again you are charged a lot.

It's best to have minimum contact with scammers. Do not open unfamiliar emails. Do no click on links. Do not call unrecognised numbers. Do not draw out telephone calls from unsolicited callers.

I looked at a job on Indeed. The advert contained a telephone number and name to contact. Rang it, no-one there, but left a message with my telephone number, as requested.

About four hours later, I got the first of two different telephone calls, that as soon as I picked up. The line went dead. The calls were from Senegal, which I straight away blocked.

Anything asking for or offering money is a scam unless you are absolutely sure you know where it's come from. Even then double check that it's right.

I'm waiting to be arrested for non payment of tax, waiting for my broadband to be cut off, a refund from the tax office, a visit from bailiffs because I haven't paid a bill, compensation for an accident that wasn't my fault and my share of money from a member of the Nigerian royal family. All this while I'm expecting a visit from the very nice Russian lady who needed air fare to get over here.

Even if you're 100% certain it's your bank, insurance co etc don't ever give details out. Always use a separate phone to double check with the institution themselves.
