Thought i'd see how everyone is getting on without being able to train properly at the moment.

Biking and running not to bad, but really missing the swimming, i know from the last long lockdown i lost so much endurance in the pool. Even though i was strength training and swiss ball and bungee's to try and keep things moving.

Any idea's or suggestions as to what everyone is doing ?

Marty

If you’re Competing against a Hippopotamus, make sure you make time up in the cycling, cause they’re faster at swimming and running.

Not much we can do for swimming until probably April when open water swimming starts up again. Then it'll feel like drinking in treacle again. Lol

It's really frustrating but I was surprised how easy I found it after lockdown 1 when I first jumped back into open water. Fingers crossed that the pools open before open water venue's do.

Just keep chipping away on the turbo and with your runs.

For me the problem was getting my endurance back,

Before i could happily swim 2k in 34 mins feeling good, getting back in for the first time i only managed 1k before feeling totally knackered. Took me a couple of months to get back to where i was.

On the upside my swim was always my weakest, so not swimming & using that time to run further with biking about the same I am a stronger runner at the end of a race, whereas swim improvements were tiny compared to the time put in. Do miss swimming though.

I'm the complete opposite

The swim was my strongest, with my run the hardest, even now i still hate running with a passion and can't seem to get any quicker.

But you are right the swim is the shortest gains, luckily lockdown has made my bike a lot stronger so swings and roundabouts

Just East of Wakefield

Not a triathlete, but l (on occasions) used to ride with a very good Triathlete, also run with at ParkRuns

Well..... see him at the start & the finish, as him (& his wife) were both about 2 minutes faster than me (l averaged '21:10' over the 4 courses l regularly used)

Sadly, not seen either of them for a while

So, now it's all 'Lone Wolf' riding

Trying to start running again, after a while away from it

Hope you all stay in shape & race fit

"I will shut up then as a mostly sprint & standard distance athlete..."

Not at all

You run a lot faster pace, still very few people can make Olympic distance within a decent time.

I am more endurance based, takes me 30 minutes for my legs to stop complaining on the bike lol

Then they just go uncomfortably numb for 6 hours

Yes, we're due to do Vitoria-Gasteiz on the 11/7/21. Just hoping and praying it will happen but the latest noises out of Spain are not very positive for the tourist season.

We're also due to do Majorca 70.3 as a warm up in May but that is looking very doubtful.

My back up (Mr) is Wales in September, which should be a goer. Mrs is off to a wedding for that one.

"I will shut up then as a mostly sprint & standard distance athlete..."

As mentioned, they can be much harder as you'll push yourself faster. A 70.3 is our favourite distance as it's the perfect bike distance to hit hard and still have something in the tank for the run.

I am looking at giving this year a miss for full distance, no swimming until April by the look of things won't give me enough time to get my endurance back.

There are a couple of nice Olympic distance round this way that i might try at the end of the season hopefully.

Wales is your back up, full respect as that's meant to be one of the hardest races.

Not sure how you are finding Ironman's updates every email i get seems to be positive just had the 6 month one for Thun but honestly i can see travel if nothing else being a huge problem.

I’ve got a differed entry for my first half IM this summer , no clue if it’s going ahead as yet

& have concerns with no swimming for months.

Could be ugly in the water if it goes ahead with no swim training for months.

Good luck keep motivated out there folks

I was looking at IM Finland this year. I'm not convinced this will be resolved as quickly as some hope though.

Open water swimming kept me active until September. I got 6 weeks in the pool as well until they closed. Absolutely loathe swimming and don't miss it at all!

The bike is a struggle with the weather but running is going well. I may return to ultras this year and build a base for 2022.

A lot of club members have invested in swim aides for their dry training sessions. I don't think they replicate the water experience personally.

Good luck all of you in whatever event you compete in

Just started using Zwift my first 3 hour ride today on it will see how boring it is compared to the TV lol

The hardest thing is motivation at this time of year, slippery roads, no swimming, i enjoy the bike but when it's all you have your mind starts playing games with you.

Luckily i have plenty of chants in my head to push through but it is getting harder.

3 hours on the turbo is tough. If you're thinking about longer in the saddle on a turbo then consider getting an Omni rocker. Rather than being in a fixed position it replicated road conditions and makes it more comfortable and you'll be less saddle sore.

Singed up for my for my first tri for June last year, have to be honest and say my trainings significantly slipped over the back end of last year. Back on the turbo and back up to 10running distance, swimming still and issue. Tried an open water in the lake last weekend and can honestly say I’ll not be doing that again until summer- not pleasant at all

Well that was harder then expected

Managed 2 hours

Main reason was to get more real power feel as my taxc runs at whatever i set it so no thinking just ride, not the same as the road.

Managed to hold 165w average but kept spiking over 200w on climbs maxed out at 330w before i backed off. Is there a way of knowing climbs are coming as it just seemed to get harder with no notice !!!! Might be me missing something but would be nice to at least change down in preparation for a climb.

Changed my saddle to an ISM 3.1 PN as was getting a very numb cock !!! lol

This helped a lot on longer turbo rides max i've managed is just under 4 hours.

Never heard of a rocker plate to be honest will look into it. Is it for out of saddle or does it help with tri bar riding as well ?

As most of my time is down in my bars hence change of saddle perched on the front needed a nice channel at the front.

What do you need?

Anything to help me really. What should I be doing on the bike in terms of distance/time/power runs distance/weight vest on or off.

Done the super spring it 40 mins with no training don’t a half marathon in 1:35 with little training so kinda really wanna step out my comfort zone and push myself my body and see how strong my mind is x "

Set yourself a target distance. Judging by what you've done, start with Olympic distance. 1500m swim is difficult to train for at the moment but once you're back in pools or open water, is a comfortable distance and you should allow yourself 30 minutes ish to achieve. The bike is a comfortable distance to train for and again, easy to complete on any training session. You are quick for the run so it's only fitting in brick sessions off the bike. Maybe with your run time for a half marathon you should consider a 70.3 mid distance as the swim is only slightly more. It's only how you cope with 56 miles on the bike and completing the run afterwards. Your run time would indicate that you should be aiming below 6 hours for a 70.3

It's about consistency

When i first started Olympic distance seemed so hard, now I might do a couple at the end of the year just as training.

Getting your head around pacing all 3 at a comfortable pace so in the last 10 miles of the run you can

A keep going

B push to leave everything out there

Be warned its addictive, and gets expensive in both time and money

It's 90% mental and the other half physical

Something that has always pushed me on.

Just over 2% of the world have completed a marathon

0.01% have completed an ironman

"Anyone able to help me out with some training please? I’m still pretty new and only done a few super sprints so far but was looking forward to upping the distances. Just working of the idea that I’m pretty fit at the moment more then knowing what I’m doing so any help would be much appreciated x "

Twice weekly brick sessions are the way to go along with individual training, swim every day (if possible) and I like to do hill work for running and cycling as feel the strength gains from it translate to less fatigue over longer periods
