I’m one of the ones to say never again not because I believe everyone is the same but the ones I have loved since have never been reciprocated so I’ve not been proven wrong haha, and I’m not getting any younger

Yes, it can be a wonderful feeling. It can also hurt, but I believe that you sometimes need to take risks to experience the best things in life...hearts mend in time, and I'd rather risk suffering that pain than never feel the joy of love

I think we can choose how we label falling in love. I have now chosen to call it infatuation if it isn’t reciprocated. Falling in love if it is mutual. I also put a time boundary on it, in the sense that sufficient time needs to have evolved for the depth of mutual connection to be profound enough to call love.

So a brief intense period of getting the feels, that peters out quite quickly I call it mutual infatuation. If only I or the other person feels it I call it infatuation and if it develops into something more lasting but still has that depth of intensity as I say we fell in love. Therefore I think that happened twice.

The first time, many many years ago, and brought with it highs and lows, the worst of which was her death. That still echos through almost every aspect of my life, and has caused me more than a few issues.

Anything in the decades since then has been misguided, and misinterpreted by me, such that I now know and accept that it wasn't love. And this was brought home to me when I met someone, and very rapidly and uncontrollably found myself well and truly in love.

It can happen when you least expect it, and I'm not convinced it's controllable either. I was quite satisfied in my own mind that I was truly emotionally locked down. I'd met the perfect storm.

The highs you feel when you are in love are comparable to the lows you suffer when it ends. It hurts so so very much and something genuinely breaks inside you (call it your heart or anything else).

I have had my heart broken and it feels like a part of you has died. Still feel that way.

The take away from that is you think it is avoidable?

Keep the door firmly shut. Make the chamber of your emotions airtight, so nothing gets in or out. Locked down, more than we are right now or ever can be. Then they come along, put some C4 around the door frame, trigger the fuse, blow the door to shit taking some masonry with it, and then before the dust has settled standing before you in the place you never thought they could get to is the most life-changing person you've ever met, and your heart beats to a different rhythm.

Just curious how you'd avoid that.

In some ways it’s worse than someone dying, they are still there just not with you. The difference is normally you heal a few years later you say thank fuck I didn’t end up with that one.

I’m demiromantic, meaning I can’t “fall in love” unless I feel a deep connection with someone. Hence why I’m 42 and only been in love once. I didn’t think it could or would ever happen, so that connection snuck up on me and by the time I knew what was happening it was too late. So yes, I think I can avoid it, it just means keeping people at a bit more of a distance. Which, to avoid feeling like I want to die when it ends, is worth doing.

Being in love is such an amazing feeling if the other person feels the same about you.

True, deep, in love is rare. Caring deeply for someone and loving them as a friend is great, but actually being in love is something else and off the scale. Lots of people get the two confused and that's when you can start getting problems.

Yes once.

I couldn't cope with the pain of the end for a second time so I dont want anything that intense again.

A few times. It can hurt like hell but I think it's worth it when it's right, even if it isn't forever.

Yup. It's either the best thing ever or the worst imaginable.

This is the first time I've continued to keep falling more in love tho

I've been racking my brains with regards to this post, about a podcast I listened to a while back. The discussion ended up on the subject of love and heard a wonderful outlook on it. I haven't listened to the whole podcast again, but I'll paraphrase and butcher the main point as follows.

Love is a Fog that dissipates with the first light of reality. So fleeting and temporary, made up of moments in which if no work or effort is put into it, will die/dissappear/fade as we take it for granted.

Or something like that, but it did resonate with me.
