Hi Derek, hope you enjoyed it?

I never have been on a cruise as I'm worried I'd get sea sick. But it would be lovely to visit a few countries in the one holiday x

Somewhere off the edge of the map... 'ere there be monsters

Been on two cruise holidays. First was a Nile cruise in 2010, where we did hot balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings, lots of temple tours and scuba diving in the Red Sea.

Second was a Norway fjords and Iceland in 2019, where we saw some of the most beautiful places I've ever seen, and enjoyed a fair few all-inclusive cocktails on that one!

Both really fab holidays. If and when things get back to normal a cruise holiday is deffinitely worth it for those who've yet to try it.

The feeling of being trapped (on board). The dressing up to eat. Being captive and overcharged for everything. Being forced to tip

We haven't been cruising but would love to do the Norway fjords and Iceland, and Canada/Alaska.

We wikll travel further afield once our children have grown up.

I have been on a weeks Mediterranean cruise many years ago. It was a lovely holiday.

I liked the fact of getting a taste of numerous destinations in 1 holiday.

Now what I would love to do is to go on a swingers cruise. I couldn't think of a more enjoyable holiday!

I'm with you on that. To the extent Royal Carribean scanned your luggage every time arriving back on board and confiscated any booze you'd bought. So forced to buy theirs at silly prices. (£30 cheapest bottle of wine at dinner. That was 10 years ago now.)

Same company same problems from us. Not only scanned but bags searched when boarding too. And they keep very quiet about being able to opt out of compulsory tipping. Think it was $2 on every drink

Most of the time you don't even realise your on a ship. Try a weeks short cruise first and when your port hopping you tend to be asleep or fucking when the ship is back at sea

I love cruising. It is perfect for solo travellers. Easy to make conversation with others if you want. Lots of entertainment and day trips. On most cruises you can pre-pay for an all inclusive drinks package and there is a bistro where you can eat in the evenings if you don't like dressing up for dinner in the restaurant.

I took my camper to Bilbao by ferry in 2019 ...the trip out was a bit rubbish as the boat was economy class full of truckers...the return trip was in a better ship more like a cruise liner with great activities for the kids and everyone else ... whale watching etc

When I was younger I went on a two week Fred Olsen cruise to the Norwegian Ffjords with my family. It was something my gramp had wanted to do as he had served in Norway (and other places) during WW2.

The Ffjords are stunning. Highly recommend it.

couple, us we him her.

Use the GOSPORT ferry occasionally 8 mins of amazement.

As for a cruise can't think of anything worse than being trapped on a boat with a load of middle class who think that they are the centre of the universe and get dressed up like a dog's dinner just to go for breakfast, and everyone usually ends up with the shits anyway!

Floating Petri dish full of retired builder's and policemen.

No thanks

London

Did a tui all inclusive one two years ago around the med for a week to try something different and added 4 nights in a hotel at the end of it in case it was shite. Wasn’t too sure about it but it was actually very good, went to places I probably wouldn’t have gone to, Monaco being one (and was lucky enough to see an amazing firework display from the ship in the evening)

Mixed bunch of passengers from old to young and from all walks of life...yes you can dress up, or not it’s your choice. I chose not to but that didn’t hamper my experience of it.

Would I do it again...yes.

Don't enjoy boat journeys

Don't enjoy coach travel

Train all the way

Been on 3 cruises. First was a Mediterranean as tester for 10 days, then 14 days to the Caribbean and 14 days to Scandinavia. All quite a few years ago with Royal Caribbean. My experience was different to an earlier contributor. The price was with on board tips included plus an allowance for free drinks. The drinks package didn't include non mixed spirits i.e. things like whisky, gin,rum etc. No luggage got searched as far as I know. Ours certainly didnt.

As for on board play with others it was no go for me as I was with family, who I no longer have. And no, before the wags here say it, they didnt fall overboard or get shipwrecked! Lol

I'm looking to book another cruise this year but as already said as a singleton the cost is punishing.

You will get from a cruise whatever you wish (within reason!) as long as you have done your research and booked on a cruise line that suits you.

An example would be if you don't want to dress up for dinner (for other meals more casual clothing is fine) then don't choose a "dressy" line like Cunard.

Look out for offers with additional onboard credit. Sometimes it is possible to get so much credit it gets difficult to spend it all!

If you want a family cruise with children, then choose a ship with plenty on board activities etc. aimed at children.

Read up on forums about the line(s) / ship(s) in which you are interested before booking.

By doing your research properly (tipping policy, sea day / port day ratio, etc.) you should end up having a great time on your chosen cruise!

Tips!!!

Reading through this forum and some people feel they are been ripped off with the tips.

It's simple, just go to the pursers desk and ask for the automatic gratuities to be removed , it's NOT compulsory, they say it's to take the worry out of tipping, however if you order drinks both alcohol and "special coffees on board and sign your "charge ticket" there is another line where you can add yet more tips!!

We remove automated tips on every cruise, I'm not meen, on my last day I give the cabin staff a couple of 20's for good service, and tge same in the restaurant.

Otherwise, 14 nights at £11 each person can be over £300 in tips!! Would you do it at home, NO.

I also grab a bottle of wine when I go ashore, sampling the local wines, take it on board open it in my cabin, have a glass before I go to dinner and take a glass down with me.

If you ask them to open the bottle, you got it, more money £20 "corkage charge"

A cheap bottle on board is £35/40 and go into the hundreds for a special reserve.

Hope these "tips" help you save 100's when on board....

Again I'm just addressing a few comments to help.

Yes, research is key, there are cruises for everyone, our worst one was a 3 day to Gurnsey.

Booze cruise, stag do's, hen parties, 3 nights very cheap, our own fault....

Even on Cunard which I am a platinum member, you do not have to dress up to eat in the Buffet restaurant on the top decks on all 3 Queens.

In the Restaurant/bars/casinos on the lower decks there is a dress code.

See my message headded "tips"
