Soul searching - Boredom.

Inviting you to speak of boredom.

Something what always amused me is hearing: I'm bored I don't know what to do. I hardly never have that feeling.. opposite - my brain races too much.

What's the boredom really? Is it a force of your brain slowing down peacefully and expecting you to come out of the box of your everyday thoughts? Pushing you to do something new?

I used to think: bored=unimaginative. But there has to be a moment of pause to allow creation of any kind to happen right? To listen to yourself. Maybe it's just that.

Hope you aren't completely bored by the end of this post.

To me personally, boredom is monotony of a situation.

So like you my brain will wonder off in all manner of directions if I'm left in peace. I only ever tend to get bored if the task I need to do requires brain power in a predictable way (e.g. Calculations for work) or there is nothing new to be learnt from the task. I have absolutely no idea if that makes sense whatsoever

To me boredom is repetition of something.

I can quite happily do nothing for hours, but if I have to repeat the same task multiple times I quickly lose all interest.

Same with relationships, which is why I am single I guess!

I feel you. Soon as I posted it I was wondering if I make sense at all.

But its up to us to break the monotony no?

Maybe its the people who ask others to resolve their boredom I "have issue" with !

But you can turn a chore for example into something adventurous or at least try and distract your mind or hands or whatever it is. When I'm bored listening to something I start doodling. On topic. Not well but works. Channeling boredom into something else.

Oh gosh yes it's up to the individual to find their own zest for life. Yes there are chores I rather not do but I dance and wiggle about washing dishes, my best ideas for work come to me in the shower.

If you're bored go do something that doesn't bore you. Imagination is a wonderful thing that people tend to underutilise these days

I think that's what I'm digging in my head now. Did we become less creative because we have so much technology around and things we rely on that it became less of an issue. I remember when my ex cut off our Internet without warning and kids were bored and upset it hit me that they felt so helpless against boredom. We solved it so screw him, but I recall their initial reaction - what are we going to do now? And I was like.. oh we'll Play!

Yes I think technology has limited creative play. Kids TV was only on for a couple of hours when I was a child. Plus I think parents don't let kids figure things out for themselves as much. I'm our blended family I'll happily sit back and let the kids struggle a little bit whereas M is more a helicopter and helps straight away.

Imaginative play and struggling to think for solutions to problems myself is what has made me good at my job. Whereas the spoonfed people tend to struggle more

Oh hell yes!... I can tolerate it when children say they are bored, but adults moaning about how bored they are?... There are a myriad of possibilities out there, literally millions of things ANYONE can do or see.... You need to seek them out for yourself!

If you’re an adult and you’re bored and can’t think of something to do by yourself, you lack imagination

Boredom to me signifies an absence of challenge or stimulation or even entertainment.

I cannot say I am ever bored as I always have something to do, somebody to chat to if I want to and even quiet "me" times are not boring as I might listen to music, read or meditate.

I struggle a bit with people stating they are "so bored" (not just in lockdown) as I have always found bored people boring if that makes sense somewhere?

Through the building trade Im constantly moving or doing something, Never much time for a break at best of times.

Its the slow times or during holidays when I have nothing to do that get to me as I cant keep still for long.

Ive built a homemade larder unit on christmas day.

Dug the garden over just for something to do.

Many more building jobs done inbetween my holidays.

Staying still for long periods isnt my thing through the trade I do.

Worthing

Sometimes not doing anything can be good. Gives brain and mind to rest while thinking about what's going on in ones life. Boredom to me therefore is doing the same thing over and over again in a short space of time to such an extent that it becomes tiresome and you loathe doing it.

Doing the same thing over and over might be comforting routine too. As for giving your mind a space.. May be that's what I'm trying to remove my own made up stigma of boredom being a negative force. Its helpful seeing others perspective.

Yes a bit of a suggestion works sometimes. One of mine struggles with it though. And I don't want that spoon fed mind as Frida described it.. wondering how do you inspire change of attitude in someone who probably uses being bored as an excuse not to do anything uncomfortable/new.

I actually think it's a lot to do with over stimulation. We're so used to being constantly busy and stimulated that any down time at all makes your brain wish for something to look at or do. It feels unnatural to just be now with technology and cultural changes.

I'm some cases yes. As someone said above there's really no reason to be bored, you can always find something to do... Its more of an excuse to avoid doing things or simply being uncomfortable doing nothing at all. In my opinion that is.

Boredom I think is having nothing to occupy your mind, or the sense that you're missing out on something other people are doing. A longing for something.

Perhaps embracing doing nothing as doing something is the way to combat that?

I think also, it can be when you don't know what self care means to you, you don't know what you need or how to motivated yourself.

I do think a lot of us need to feel productive, but are unsure how or where to channel it when the obvious or interesting things we are used to are now gone.

For me boredom is a state of mind.

If I feel 'bored' then it's difficult to find anything to snap me out of it.

Feeling inspired and interested only comes when I'm in a good place - it has little to do with what I'm doing.

Boredom for me is finding nothing simulating or interesting for an extended period in a given situation or series of situations.

I experience it quite a lot; I may be involved in many tasks across the day but often none of them have any redeeming qualities in terms of being enjoyable, intriguing or engaging in any other than a repetitious way.

"For me boredom is a state of mind.

If I feel 'bored' then it's difficult to find anything to snap me out of it.

Feeling inspired and interested only comes when I'm in a good place - it has little to do with what I'm doing.

"

That’s true, when you are bored you can flick through dozens of book and film titles or think about projects that need working on or any number of hobbies and nothing appeals at all. Other times you can just put the radio on late at night and bake and be so content that hours just disappear, this state I learned recently is called flow - boredom is the opposite to flow

That might be just the answer I was looking for. "FLOW" seems more user friendly term..
