Don't give up hope Wonko.

Just think of it as trial and error.

I've never done a search on here and sent a first message, even on my old account.

I just reply, but it takes that special spark (usually humour) for a reply.

You'll get there, you're a good person

I guess the types word can be hard to gauge than the spoken word because you have body language, intonation and facial expressions to reinforce what you say

They have seen something about your profile they like, so they have initiated contact.

Maybes just have a bit banter with them before returning a compliment or mentioning their profile.

Maybes try a different tact and see if it works?
