Losing weight

Today is day 1 of losing weight, is there anyone who is also trying to lose weight and maybe we can encourage each other. Either add to the thread or PM me

I have limited mobility (not due to being overweight but obviously carying extra weight doesn't help)so i intend to lose a fair amount of weight. Since march i have put on lots of extra weight, although i mostly worked through the first lockdown i was furloughed occasionally, i just over ate. Im furloughed again due to being clinically extremely highly vulnerable and work being dangerous for me so i will use this time to lose weight.

Anyone have useful information ?

Anyone want to join me ?

I have a friend who follows a Keto diet and they have lost loads of weight. It does take lots of effort, especially at the begining. Good luck

Good luck. Hope you succeed

If you want to lose weight then simply put, you need to create a calorie deficit in your lifestyle. Look for foods which are healthy, filling and versatile so that you can vary your meals and not create boredom in your diet (leading to hunting for treats and exciting foods). At the same time, allow yourself a treat every now and again.

Don't push too hard and appreciate what you have achieved each day. Don't underestimate the mental health benefits of exercise, which, whilst they can't be measured by scales or what you see in the mirror, can still have a hugely positive impact on your wellbeing and outlook on life.

Pretty much this! Stay consistent, track your food & try walking 10k steps a day. Don’t get ahead of yourself aim for 1-2lb a week.

Today is day one for me too.

I'd been using my cross trainer as a clothes horse and my weights as door stops. I will find out when I get up how much weight I've put on. My aim is 10kg a month.

I've found if I look at the total I need to lose it becomes daunting, but breaking it down in small chunks works.

The struggle is real: good luck everyone.

Thanks, iv got to alter what i eat, boredom is the problem though so il look online for new recipes.

Sadly exercise doesnt help my mental health at all, exercise is very painful for me (not due to being obese though) so its never fun but i will walk every day

I need to shift about 8kg. I can do this by following Weight Watchers, drinking more water and walking 10,000 steps per day. The only thing that gets in the way is self motivation to stick to my points. I lost 1.5 stone in 3 months on this a couple of years ago so i have done it before so no reason why i can't do it again. Wish me luck!

I lost a lot of weight and got really fit till October last year then a back injury has meant hardly any exercise in 3 months. Along with an ankle niggle

I started yesterday On week 3 of couch to 5km. I will be honest i could run a 5km in about 28 mins but 25 mins of mixed walking and running and I was fucked.

It just shows how unfit I have become. Which is disappointing. I do need some new scales. Today I am going for a 5km walk, around my local area when it lightens up.

I may invite my dad to walk with me though not sure if he will be able to keep up. He is due for a heart op so needs to improve his fitness

For me yes I need to loose weight but I do need to get fit. The weight tends to come off with fitness

I lost quite a bit of weight during the first lockdown.

I do intermittent fasting so I tend to have brunch (eggs are your friend) between 12-1 and then my evening meal about 6/7pm. But nothing after. But I am aware this is not suitable for everyone but it suits me.

If I snack it’s on fruit or small amounts of cheese or nuts.

I don’t tend to worry about calorie counting but I keep portion sizes smaller than I used to.if I want carbs I eat carbs but I also eat lots of veg, same goes for treats if I want crisps or chocolate I give myself permission but only have a small amount.

For me denying myself a variety of foods just makes me crave them more. Allowing myself the option/choice often means I’m more inclined to choose heathy 8o-90% of the time.

I walk lots & do weights but If walking is a struggle can you maybe do some gentle yoga exercises?

More importantly if you have a bad day and overindulge don’t let it derail you, draw a line under it and get back on it the next day!

Sorry to hear that exercise is painful but the fact that you are overcoming barriers is a big step, just don't do more damage or cause more pain.

Look for the little victories. You may walk a little bit further or do the same distance in a quicker time. That's progress and it should be celebrated.

Sign up to an app (e.g. STRAVA) so that you can see other things like elevation gain too.

There are also challenges like number of hours active in a month or cover a certain distance. The rewards, although virtual, may also be a nice little boost for you.

I got a badge yesterday for doing 4.5 hours activity within the first 2 weeks of Jan. Doesn't matter how slow or fast you're going, the fact that you're doing something for 4.5 hours is the goal

I’m all in on this! First resistance band workout today, long walk later. Trying to be less frivolous with booze, red meat and chocolate, and stuffing more pulses and veg in my greedy chops. I want more tone, less tum, and the sort of shirtless photos that get fabbed silly.

Asked my lovely nutritionist cousin she was all about The calorie deficit too. It’s the way to go. No dietary strictness, just sensible balance and realistic expectations. Let’s do this together!

Diets in the usual sense are all good for crash weight loss but not really sustainable in the long term.

I’d start by logging your food and drink intake for a few days or a week at current routine also looking at when you are consuming calories. That will then show where issues lie, there are a number of apps that you can scan packaging into or search for common things and then create meals etc.

It can be quite surprising how calories mount up in some meals and barely in others.

Tweak your meals so they are healthier but just as easy and fulfilling to make and consume.

My mum is a regular one week dieter, she starts boiling cabbage and all sorts for a week then after a week it’s too much effort and she wants a bottle of wine and a packet of crisps at night then the diet is out of the window.

There’s also evidence for narrowing the window that you eat within, if you can try and consume the calories with 8-10 hours then outside of that only water or black coffee. It can be extended to 12 hours if that’s easier but the effect is reduced.

If you can hold off for a few hours in the morning it can make it workable to maybe 7-8pm, plus your body adapts to the later start.

Another important factor is getting a full amount of sleep 8-10 hours, that sets your body up properly but also less awake time to be feeling hungry.

Sorry to hear exercise is painful and that is going to hinder you a little but as you’re aware and others have said, activity is better than no activity so just keep motivated and don’t feel you need to break yourself, gentle progress and lifestyle changes will have the most sustainable results.

Good luck

Good luck.

I put on weight after an injury meant I had to stop running. I started in autumn and lost 3st in 10/11 weeks. I have to be in the right mindset and focused. I’ve had a few weeks off in December (mostly so I could co sure all the alcohol I wanted to ) but I’m back on plan today.

I reduced my calorie intake to 600-800 a day or on days that I exercise I up it to 1000 calories if needed as often I am really hungry then (I row about 10k 3 times a week).

I’m not sure how much more weight I want to lose, I’m more bothered about fitting into a pair of skinny jeans that I wore prior to my injury!

Sometimes I get bang on it and get ahead of myself. Made two so I don’t have to think about what I need first thing in the morning. Will probably do pancakes for Weds/Thurs and then that’s most of the hard work done.

Asked my lovely nutritionist cousin she was all about The calorie deficit too. It’s the way to go. No dietary strictness, just sensible balance and realistic expectations. Let’s do this together!"

Yes its important to be realistic

"Good luck.

This

All the different fad diets do is create a calorie deficit but it may not be long term. Look to make sustainable, permanent changes to your diet and lifestyle.

For me, cutting out bread and carbs would not be a sustainable option...

Tracking what you put in your body with a diary can be really helpful (and a tad revealing...I had to say hello to emotional eating...).

Also, if you have a menstrual cycle, understand it and track where you are as that will have different effects at certain stages and you can factor in extra calories (from healthier sources) and not beat yourself up if it feels like things are going down the drain.

Good luck!

"Diets in the usual sense are all good for crash weight loss but not really sustainable in the long term.

Good luck "

I'm starting to walk everyday now although its very painful but i have to do it. Maybe il end up jogging

Ive cut out alcohol and midmeal snacks. Ive slso slightly reduced portion sizes, i dont eat after 6pm and take a bit of excercise in the form of walking. Start of with baby steps and build up IMO. "

"Good luck.

I’m not sure how much more weight I want to lose, I’m more bothered about fitting into a pair of skinny jeans that I wore prior to my injury!"

I can recommend My Fitness Pal app to help you monitor what you eat. The basic one is free and I have been using it for a year. You put your goals on it for each day and then enter everything you eat and drink - being mindful really helps. I also try to keep to a shopping list and then if you don’t have the wrong food at home you can’t eat it.

Day 3 for me.

I was working out in the gym 4-5 times a week pre-covid. Throughout the lockdown I've worked. But the lack of exercise has had an affect.

I'm going through the menopause too which has changed my body shape.

And then in October I contracted covid-19. The fatigue was ridiculous. I was then diagnosed with long covid!

So hear I am....back to square one. I'm counting my macros: proteins, carbohydrates and fats. I've started doing a walk every other day with some push ups, sit ups, squats and planks in the hope of working up to starting the couch to 5k in a week or so.

I'm trying not to do too much too soon and burn myself out.

Wish me luck

I'm overweight and trying to do something about it too. She says eating the last of the After Eights for breakfast. I have limited mobility due to disability. I struggle to have the strength to cook every day.

Over the last few years, I have realised these facts -

* If you're weighing yourself, do it at the same time every week wearing the same clothing, or none.

* You will get the odd week when you don't lose any or you put a little on despite eating properly. This is normal. You could be losing inches or your hormones could be taking over that week.

* Don't compare yourself to anyone else. You can be the same height, weight and size as someone else, yet have a completely different body shape.

* I celebrate clothing fitting better or getting looser more than each pound I lose.

* If you don't eat regularly, your body is likely to store the food because it never knows how long it's got to go before getting more. This is my biggest problem.

* Try and eat 3 proper meals each day. Eggs or porridge will keep you fuller for longer.

* Controlled diets work for some, not for others. I call what I'm doing "eating properly". E.g. if I'm craving chocolate, biscuits or a pizza, I'll have some, but not too much. If I don't, I'll stuff my face with them a few days later. If I'm out for a meal and others are having a dessert, so am I. I'll eat extra healthy food the next day to make up for it.

* Microwave salted popcorn is a good healthier alternative to crisps and chocolate when you're watching TV.

* If you don't buy it, you can't eat it.

I'm joining you on this journey. I have clothes that are a size or two too small. I want to get into them and also find sexy lingerie easier.

*** My note to myself - time to take your own advice!!!

"What sort of things should be in the losing weight buddy club? ..no snacks? Don't let food rule your life?..any other tips or thoughts? "

Snack, definitely snack. If you pile all your intake into three meals then you are more susceptible to grazing/cheating at different points in the day. Eat 5 times a day but break it down into manageable chunks. Eat a breakfast, lunch and dinner, snacking halfway between each one. It won't work for everyone but I eat at 8, 10.30, 1, 3.30 and 6.

Research and find healthier alternatives. I've struggled with eating enough and my goal for this year is to make sure I sufficiently fuel my body.

Yesterday I was able to eat 5 pancakes, 5! Because they were made out of crushed banana and egg rather than flour etc they are considered healthy and also count as reduced carbs too. So I was able to eat all of it and not feel guilty at the end of it.

I've started an alternative day fasting diet and have managed two days fasting so far. Previously I was successful with the 5:2 diet and one big tip is to write down every thing you consume with the calories noted. Add up the calories cumulatively through the Day. First this will highlight to you which foods are very high in calories that you probably didn't realise and second give you the change to stop eating these or find a lower callory option. I set my self a callory limit each day and planned my meals and timing of my meals with this in mind.

Best recommendation I can make is to make small, manageable changes. If you make huge changes, they’re likely to be unsustainable and you’ll fall off the wagon.

Use SMART goals (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time-bound).

Another vote for using MyFitnessPal here. Don't even need the premium paid account to see the benefit. After a while you'll know off by heart exactly what foods you should be eating to keep you feeling full which aren't calorie packed.

Personally I find the following helps....

- Cut out bread (really hard for me as I love it!)

- Make homemade soups. Thick Carrot & Coriander soup or mixed bean ones are good

- Snack on celery, carrots, cucumber

- And obviously exercise more(ground breaking news eh? )

I've got a goal to walk 100 miles in Jan while the gyms are shut and I'm also trying to get to grips with some resistance bands I ordered online (although I'm not a huge fan so far).

Good luck.

I lost 35lbs between June - November last year.

I lost the plot in December though and definitely feel and look quite a bit bigger so I dread to think how much I've put back on - I'm scared to stand on the scales

I didn't do anything special to lose the weight -

I try to eat mostly wholefoods, counted calories through MyFitnessPal, had a cut of time of 6.30pm to stop eating and skipped breakfast.

So there was 16hrs between my first and last meal.

I did this Monday - Thursday and relaxed Friday- Sunday usually with wine

I walk 10 - 1500 steps a day and have a Fitbit and cycle a little.

Nothing too hard-core no lycra and mostly on the pavement

I REALLY need to get back on it as I still have a lot to lose- my inbox is open if anyone wants to be my diet buddy

I'd quite like to lose 6-8lbs. The couple I've put on over Christmas and a few more. I'll be going back to a variation of 5:2 where two days a week I only eat dinner. I've found it to be the only thing that works for me now that I'm close to my target weight. It was much easier when I had stones to lose.

Intermittent fasting here - unsurprisingly over Christmas I put on weight (cheese pounds) so I need to try and shift it and then some. I'm going to cut out carbs again, frequently go for a run and be kinder to myself - the latter really helps me lose weight. I've also given myself some incentives and trying to kick start my competitive side.

I can recommend My Fitness Pal app to help you monitor what you eat. The basic one is free and I have been using it for a year. You put your goals on it for each day and then enter everything you eat and drink - being mindful really helps. I also try to keep to a shopping list and then if you don’t have the wrong food at home you can’t eat it."

Good idea il have a look

"Day 3 for me.

Wish me luck "

"I'm overweight and trying to do something about it too.

"Best recommendation I can make is to make small, manageable changes. If you make huge changes, they’re likely to be unsustainable and you’ll fall off the wagon.

Use SMART goals (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time-bound).

You’ve got this! Feel free to message me if you want a sounding board! "

"Good luck.

Thanks, iv got to alter what i eat, boredom is the problem though so il look online for new recipes.

Sadly exercise doesnt help my mental health at all, exercise is very painful for me (not due to being obese though) so its never fun but i will walk every day

I totally understand this. I have a couple of injuries which make even walking painful but have been pushing on with it as I've gained over a stone since last year (needed to lose weight before that!)

Good luck all. If you do set up a group for support, tips and such like I'd love to be involved!

Mrs x although hubby needs to shift some timber too "

Thank you.

I walked just over a mile today, it was painful but hopefully i will get faster, couldnt be much slower lol

However i had a small chocolate bar with lunch, better than eating 3 chocolate bars i guess lol x

"Another vote for using MyFitnessPal here.

Good luck. "

"I lost 35lbs between June - November last year.

"

I've found it to be the only thing that works for me now that I'm close to my target weight. It was much easier when I had stones to lose. "

Good luck, I hope you get to where you wanna be beautiful.

I’ve been similar I’ve put on a stone or soo after being on steroids for 6 months and can’t exercise how I’d like due to the after effects of an injury.

I have found walking to be amazing exercise and also great for my general well being. Doing what you can without over doing is hard but so worth it.

Low carb and intermittent fasting I also found to be a great help. It’s hard for the first few days but gets much easier as you go.

My fitness pal is a good app to track what you eat. I never bother entering any exercise I do on it cos it gives you more available calories for the day, I just stick to the 1,200 (that’s when I’m eating well, I’m not atm)

Biggest tip is don’t drink your calories, so just drink water instead of pop or fruit juice.

My omelette machine is my best friend when I want to shift lbs. I’ll eat an omelette every day with various fillings.

Swap pasta and rice, chips for cauliflower rice.

Stir fry’s are good, if you can eat sesame oil I’d use that in a stir fry cos it takes like Chinese food!

Good luck with it.

I lost loads last year mainly due to portion control.

I used to eat loads at each meal (finishing off my kids food as I hate waste), but limited that, and started to drink more water and that seems to have had the biggest effect.

On top of that I stopped drinking cola. I'd moved to sugar free the year before thinking that would help, but it didn't have much affect.

Then just to help tighten things up a bit I started doing a YouTube Yoga exercise for burning belly fat. It was hard to start with, but much more enjoyable than the gym (for me).

Intermittent fasting is very helpful and simple compared to other dieting programmes, literally just skip breakfast.

Also cut refined sugars, and vegetable oil out of your diet (use olive oil, coconut oil or butter instead).

Slightly different viewpoint is the nutritional density of the food choices you make.

Radical thoughts in the early stages are not always about removing everything from your cupboards and calling it a diet. It's making a choice for life by adding in the healthy food choices gradually the trade longterm is more likely to be successful.

Blueberries, walnuts, oat rolled porridge. Switching processed sugars for naturally occurring ones and reducing your salt intake.

The steps are fantastic but if you suffer chronic pain don't immediately worry about 10000. Can you achieve 1000. Have a clear start marker and you can always build on your success from there.

Ultimately find one good thing each day that you achieved and build on it for the next.

Pinterest shows some great options and variety in meals, some even tasty meat free options for some days.

Losing a lot of weight really fast can be achieved but changing food and life habits is where your big wins will come from. Filling and replacing and fst with muscle will ultimately increase your metabolism and fat burning capabilities.

Home own body circuits are a great place to start adapting them to the most suitable start point for yourself.

Good luck everyone. Keep working on yourself each and every day and most importantly love yourselves in the process.x

To counter this when I went to the supermarket earlier, I took with me

1 x box of Maltesers

2 x boxes of Matchmakers

1 x chocolate orange

I put them in the foodbank box

Out of reach of temptation

All unnecessary calories that I would eat purely cos they were there

Losing a lot of weight really fast can be achieved but changing food and life habits is where your big wins will come from. Filling and replacing and fst with muscle will ultimately increase your metabolism and fat burning capabilities.

Home own body circuits are a great place to start adapting them to the most suitable start point for yourself.

Good luck everyone. Keep working on yourself each and every day and most importantly love yourselves in the process.x

Good info, thank you x

"Well, the good intentions were there

I prepared some Ready Brek

It tasted of nothing

So, I put a spoonful of crunchie spread in it

To counter this when I went to the supermarket earlier, I took with me

1 x box of Maltesers

2 x boxes of Matchmakers

1 x chocolate orange

I put them in the foodbank box

Out of reach of temptation

All unnecessary calories that I would eat purely cos they were there "

Well done

You’ve mentioned about it being painful, not comfortable etc and your current weight making things difficult... well guess what, you’re at the hardest stage of the whole process, starting!

Get through the first week, try your absolute hardest in week one (no giving up without finishing what you set out to do in that session/walk/exercise)

You’ll see amazing results straight away within a few weeks, and everything you do will seem so much easier after a while!

If you stick at it for a while your results will slow down and might even plateau, I would say the best thing to do is change up your exercises (your body is just getting used to doing the same ones)

Like someone else has said, work in a calorie deficit, and I would say just eat the foods that are obviously healthy to get you started, you can research the best foods to eat for losing weight, how many of each macronutrient (carbs protein and fats) etc once you’re comfortable with your new lifestyle. I recommend the myfitnesspal app to help with tracking calorie intake.

Hope this helps!

"Today is day 1 of losing weight, is there anyone who is also trying to lose weight and maybe we can encourage each other.

Anyone want to join me ?"

hi yes Mel is on a weight loss mission this year, pm us x

I’ve had quite a few DM’s regarding this thread.

I’ll continue to leave my filters down if it’s helps people on their journey. Again, feel free to message me if you’d like so guidance of more specific advise.

Reality of it - I couldn’t care how you look or what your issues are. As long as I can assist you in being a better version of yourself - as you can always improve!

No I’m no motivational speaker or anything - I just know personally the correlation between mental health wellness & fitness. Especially in the circumstances we’re currently in.

Start today. You’ll continue to put it off & continue to drive further away from your end goal

"Why cant people be fat and happy ........"

I wish more than anything that I could be.

It would have saved me years of missing out on things because of my weight.

Hi thank you.

Im just going to eat better and walk a bit. Im not counting calories, id soon give up doing that.

I walked just over a mile today, its not my weight that causes the pain though, i have an autoimmune disease that causes the pain. Im hoping weight loss will make my mobility better. Walking will be my exercise, i do have a kettle bell (is that the right name?) so will start using that

"My fitness pal is a good app to track what you eat.

Good info annie

Does an omelette machine make them without using fat ? When i make them in a wok i have to use fat or it sticks, i love omlettes and used to eat lots."

I use a non-stick pan and a little butter for extra flavour. Or you can line a pan with non-stick foil and do it on that. You need a little fat in your diet. I don't often put butter on bread or toast and if I have scrambled eggs, beans or soup, I'll have dry Ryvita. A little butter to cook eggs is allowed.

You’re welcome!

I understand what you mean about the counting calories, i guess it seems a long winded process. It’s really easy when you use apps that will save your meals that you enter though, great for if you eat the same things each week.

Your one mile walk is a great start! When you feel like your body isn’t shattered doing your mile walk, either up your pace or go further! I can promise you exercise is amazing for your mobility, health, mental wellbeing, the list goes on and on, keep going

Enjoy it. Butter adds more flavour than margarine.

What’s everyone having for dinner? I made up some chick pea and bean burgers yesterday that I need to finish up. The rest of the week it’s steak or salmon
