Hmmm that’s a good question ! I think I’m probably leaning more towards the originals but sometimes remakes can add new visuals and effects which can be pretty cool

Struggling to think of any remakes that are even on a par with the originals...only ones that spring to mind are:

Cape Fear

King Kong (the Jack Black version)

True Grit

Then there are "remakes" that take a concept and spin it like Batman or Plant Of The Apes or even the Daniel Craig Bond movies but not sure they're remakes as such as opposed to re-imaginations

Just finished watching ‘Dredd’ much better than the very dire ‘Judge Dredd’ with Sylvester Stallone.

However even great directors make mistakes with remakes, Coen Brothers Ladykillers for example.

Reboots. Is what you are looking for.

Let's be sure to separate remakes, reboots, and re-imagining.

Reboots are used for a series of films that will carry a storyline or characters across the series, with changes that may be greatly different from the original but stay true to the source.

Remakes, which is the term used for a stand-alone film. Attempt to keep things as close to the original as possible. Changes, additions and editorials may happen.

Re-imagining is when they loosely remake a movie, such as Seven Samurai/Magnificent Seven.

Sometimes reboots and re-imaginings will overlap.

Great remakes (or at least better than originals)

Homeward Bound

Ocean's Eleven

The Thing (1982 version)

The fly

The problem with most remakes is they try to remake (and fail) already good movies. Instead of looking at what movies that had good plots or premise but failed due to other reasons, and trying to make them better.

Unfortunately Dredd wasnt a remake, but I agree was infinitely better than the first. Although it felt half arsed and like it started with half hour missing. A great shame because it had so much potential.

Has to be said the Vince Vaughn re shoot of psycho was good. Think he was pretty good in the roll and just had something about him the way he played it.

First time I saw it I missed the very beginning and was confused as hell trying to work out what it actually was as it's literally an exact re shoot of the original.

I separate old films from new ones, even with the Italian job or point break, I don't consider the new ones a remake, it's just a loosely attached similar theme. I enjoy them both that way. I think a lot of people ruin new films for themselves expecting a film they are seeing through adult eyes, created in a higher tech industry by different people to capture them just like it did when they were younger or as a kid. It can't, you have to treat the new as something new.

Its a double edged sword really.

In theory the newer movies should be far superior. The ground work is there from what came before. The technology and cinematography much more advanced. And yet they fail.

The largest issue with a failure in newer movies, especially remakes is stuido involvement. They get far too involved in too many aspects that they really shouldn't. Focus groups too, they cause far too many things to get changed - seriously you should see some of the stuff they come up with that they dislike.

People shit on cgi, and yes quite often it can come across as souless but lots of techniques are poorly executed mixed in with just poor scripts, poor casting etc. Take a look at corridor crew on YouTube, their insights in to cgi allow you to see cgi with the respect it deserves.

The majority of scenes in movies have cgi in them that people don't even know is there.

Most classic originals cannot be matched by remakes due to their cast, directors, and of course the era they were made in (target audience). Others were never all that in the first place and leave ample room for improvement.

When a sufficient time period has passed, you end up in a situation where you have a different generation to entertain in a world with changed expectations. In these cases reboots have proven to be successful.

Either way, it takes a good director with a creative imagination and vision to improve upon an original or to make it fit in with modern world.

Some big scale films do benefit from the availability modern special effects, but as we've that alone won't be the winning formula.

Not sure if this counts but I say it.I grew up watching Sherlock Holmes films starring Basil Rathbone these films were made late 1930’s - 1940’s and were often repeated during the 1970’s - 1980’s there have been various remakes over the years but for me you can’t beat Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and those black and white films
