couple, us we him her.

I find the writing so very cheesy and predictable, even when the writer's diversified and tried making an adult show ( Dracula) it just ended up being another version of doctor who.

It needs to be more edgy and make up it's mind weather it's a kid's show or adults in my humble opinion it can't be both.

Definitely think it needs to be darker. Matt Smith was by far the best doctor.

The new writing is terrible, no matter how bad the previous versions of the Dr's episodes may have been at times they were far superior to what we have now.

As for Jodie, she is not a bad actress by any stretch but she certainly does not have the charm or commanding presence that the 4 previous versions had (modern Who only of course). So even the scripts can not be saved by a strong lead.

Eccleston he started it (again) he did amazing at drawing you back in to the world.

Tennant was Dr Who. No question.

Smith played the old tortured soul mixed with the young enthusiasm so well.

Capaldi while not my favourite played the stern side to the doctor very well too.

Jodie... I got nothing. She provides nothing but making you long for the days of any of the previous four.

Moffat got to the point of being a bit too egotistical and full of himself, especially once he got the Sherlock gig.

Let's not forget he wrote Blink. One of the best episodes by far, ever. And it didn't even star the Doctor.

Another amazing two part episode.

The writers/showrunners on Who have always been a bit of a mixed bag.

Davies did a fantastic job of bringing the show back and managed to meld the sci-fi stuff with the more mundane soap-opera stuff to make it accessible to a wider audience. He just had no concept of subtlety, with his writing getting broader, hammier and more on-the nose every season (particularly in his season finales, which were woeful). Making the stakes bigger each year, to the point of ridiculousness ("It's the end of the world! It's the end of the universe! It's the end of time, space and reality as we know it!")

Moffat was a great ideas man, with some awesome concepts and brilliant setups, but he had no idea how to finish a story. So many of his episodes started well, ramped up the tension through a clever, intricate plot, then fell apart with a nonsensical, hand-wavy "fairy dust and the power of love" ending. A shame, as some of his early episodes under Davies' tenure were up there with the best of them (Blink, The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead). It feels like he just spread himself too thin as showrunner.

Chibnall has been largely disappointing so far. His episodes have all *looked* amazing - the show has never looked so cinematic. The stories have been mostly rubbish, though. It's frustrating to see a show I love, that has so much potential, trot out such underwhelming stuff.

Hopefully the enforced Covid break has given him time to polish the scripts for the next season. We'll see...

That's a brilliant analysis. You're absolutely right about Davies and Moffat's flaws and strengths... although I'd maybe add that Davies took hero worship of the Doctor too far, and Moffat tried too hard to course correct that.

I've no problem with the Doctor being a woman, but Jody was let down by the scripts, very PC preachy.

It's always been PC, teaching children not to judge by appearance, to try to solve things peacefully if possible, but it was subtle (show, not tell).

Yeah, this is the thing - it's always been a politically engaged show. I hate the way it was hijacked by angry commentators when Jodie was cast, all claiming it had become too politicised. I mean, it's a show where the hero's a pacifist who mostly wins by lecturing his foes into submission! Besides, there's a whole raft of Pertwee era stories that are basically about union politics.

But you're right, there's a little subtlety that's been lost - not just in terms of the show's message but actually just the dialogue itself. No character seems to have a feeling they don't feel like directly expressing that very second. It gets wearying.

One thing I don't get at this point is - why are people always surprised when the daleks turn up, on a near annual basis, and why does nobody on earth seem to remember them?

Stopped watching when it died when PC finished. BBC woke SJW and Virtue signalling now. Lowest viewing figures for a special ever, and that was on a day when everyone was locked up and couldn't go out!!!

BBC logic seems to be that the only reason it sucks is because the fans don't like it. If they get rid of all the fans, problem solved.Well, they are doing that OK!

The problem is that it doesn't know what it is. Kids show? Adult SF? And it fails on all levels because of that. The current doctor is a fine actor, I've seen her in other shows and she's excellent but she's having to deal with atrocious scripts.

Radically change it or scrap it.

"For us oldies that remember, the original dr had a granddaughter, she stayed behind in London..I've often wondered what happened to her and his own children. "
I dont think that she was his actual grand daughter but a companion. The granddaughter bit was for the authorities when they questioned about a young girl living with an old man

"Finally new doctor who today ! Any ladies here like a bit of who? "
the writers are terrible, they've ruined who. They need to get the people back who wrote for matt. Its the scripts that are letting the show down and fkn darleks again? For a christmas special? Lazzzzzzy writing

"Anyone prefer the days when a storyline lasted weeks, each one ending on a cliff hanger? "

Yes! I was saying this to my son. The stories moved at a much better pace, characters could develop.

I used to have loads of the books, each of the stories were an actual novel.

We seem to have lost that, writers seem to think that we need instant gratification and all out pace rather than a slow burning deeper story.

Tennant my favourite, thought great with rose, bad wolf Bay.

Also the blink episode I thought was fantastic.

I've been a massive Who fan since I was a kid in the late 1980s. Loved Eccleston, liked Tennant, didn't warm to Smith, liked Capaldi but felt the writing often let his Doctor down.

I hate saying this but I think Whittaker was badly mis-cast - not because she's a woman (I can think of female actors who would do a great job) but she's playing it totally one-note - the eccentricity of Smith without the more serious side. But the bigger problem is the writing - dreadful scripts that haven't given Whittaker a chance to show what she could actually do. I'd happily keep her and get a new head writer, rather than the other way around.

But classic Who is the same - each era reacts to the previous one, and an era you don't like can lead to one that you do. Hopefully when Chibnall leaves we'll get a writer who will give the show a real shot in the arm.

Tennant era, Series 2-4 was best for me. Series 11 onwards has been a hit and miss.

Agree with all of that except I also liked Matt Smith and keeping Jodie Whittaker.

Smith just felt a little overly eccentric, like he was putting it on a bit too much. But when he was written a little...calmer, he was better. I especially liked The God Complex episode, he's really good in that one, and The Doctor's Wife.

I said I'd keep Whittaker if it meant replacing the head writer instead - I think the writing is a bigger problem than the acting, myself. Plus a good actor can only work with the script they're given - with a better script she might give a better performance.
