For some being online does away with nerves and you also get time to consider what you say whereas face to face you can stumble and become nervous.

Can imagine it's easy to get a little carried away when writing a profile to try and sell yourself. Not purposely misleading, more over zealous, but it will become obvious very quickly you're not quite what it said on the tin when meeting face to face.

Not sure I act differently online or here, but I try not to come on if I'm in a one, as don't want to project onto others and bring the mood down. That could be argued as disingenuous, but I'd be same in real life, if I was in a shitty mood or whatever, I wouldn't be attending a meet or club.

I’ve heard people say this kind of thing a lot. I’m not sure if it’s true or not. I think some people come on here for a little escapism or to be the person they’d like to be but can’t be in real life for various reasons. Not sure that means they are fake it just means they are showing a different side of themselves. I don’t think anyone (nutters aside) could keep up a ‘fake’ persona for more than a couple of hours without being caught out.

It happens and I'd go one step further and say there are those that act differently publically on-line to how they do privately on-line.

Whether there is a deliberate attempt to act differently I think may vary and be a subjective thing - as someone else said for some (me included) that extra thinking time you get on-line allows me to possibly come across as more outgoing than I actually am in person, where I tend to be a bit more reserved until I am comfortable in a situation - my core beliefs etc are still the same though, I just can't always formulate my thoughts as coherently and quickly enough in a face to face environment.

I think I appear totally different on here than I do offline/face to face.

Essentially i'm the same. These words are mine and I mean them and I never take them back BUT in reality, I don't comment often. I smile. I avoid getting into discussions with people I perceive as ...... let's say unable to discuss issues civily.

I laugh and make conversations with those who are able to put points of view and support their ideas and sometimes like to be less serious yada yada yada.

People have NO option but to TYPE here. When we don't type , we are readers ..... What is there for others to read if we do not type ?

It's the nature of the beast.

How can we NOT be different?

as is with me, I'd don't bother with grammer filter anymore,

So yep I get ya but for the most part everything you do via key board ain't far off the real deal so your not coming to the meet as someone else, ie the other person has a fair idea what's she/he is in for

The beauty of humans is that we have multifaceted sides to our personality. Different aspects are prominent at different times and it doesn’t matter if that’s in f2f or online dialogues. In the end it’s still us.

On the other hand, those who aren’t happy with their lives the so called ‘keyboard warriors’ who hide behind their computer, they can be really nasty. Or those who live in a fantasy world and have created a new persona... well humans are complicated

To be fair, I think part of the allure of Fab is that you can be a different person. Not fake as such, but you can let your inhibitions go and be a different version of yourself and explore. I don't think that makes a person fake. I certainly don't walk around in real life with my tits out, but from my pics on here you'd think I do!

Depends what you mean by fake. People do act differently depending on who they're with or talking to. I remember when at work we used to have a Christmas night out which was great fun. One year it was decided to invite partners. With their wives, husbands, girl and boyfriends it was amazing how different some people were. We never did it again.

That's actually a really good analogy and so very true - we all adapt how we act dependent on our circumstances and the situation at any given time - sometimes deliberately so, others sub-consciously.

I think where there's a potential issue though is when someone deliberately presents themselves as something they are not in an attempt to deceive but that is not something limited to on-line behaviour by any means.

I wouldnt jump straight in and ask if you enjoyed having your face sat on if we'd just bumped elbows in the library but I am pretty much the same person as here yes. Quite hard not to be really you would need to be a master manipulator to be able to hide your true self in person for long or the more you got to know someone.

It's a phenomenon very common to all types of social media i've seen. The relative anonymity and characteristics of it make it so. People can choose to present only what they might want others to see. There's nothing wrong with this, but some go to great lengths to project a completely different version of themselves from what they might actually be in person.

I think most problems occur if you come across one these extreme examples.

Me for instance, I'm a lot more tolerant and nicer online than I am in person. Someone pisses me off IRL I rarely hesitate to give them a verbal slap, doing so online is a whole lot less satisfying.

I think lots of people don't say what they actually think for fear of putting potential meets off.

Others are split fucking personalities who appear as one thing on paper, but when you see the real person you discover they really have put a lot of thought into the drivel they've been writing. Those that have learnt over the years what others expect/want so play that part on paper as exactly that, a part. They don't do as they say, they don't even believe in or live by their own words, it's nothing more than a sales pitch.
