North West

There's two types of bird flu circulating in the UK now. The H5N8 that's been circulating for a while (this is what's in Orkney and everywhere else in the UK). I was notified of a case of H5N1 bird flu yesterday too:

APHA: Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 has been found in backyard chickens near Hawes, Richmondshire, North Yorkshire. 3km and 10km temporary control zones and a 10km Temporary Movement Restriction Zone are now in place. More information available on gov.uk

Good job the science types are all over this then. The APHA have been reporting cases on a daily basis and working to try and contain. However, it's endemic in wild birds and you can't stop them from migrating/flying. Closing Stansted might reduce the spread of that other virus, but sticking a sign on the White Cliffs saying "no entry for avians" isn't going to work.

I'm going to cook and eat my budgie for Xmas dinner to avoid it getting flu and for me to avoid eating a diseased turkey.
