idiot or what?

The arrival of a man who travelled from Scotland to the Isle of Man on a jet ski to see his girlfriend was caught on camera, it has emerged.

Dale McLaughlan admitted breaching the island's Covid-19 laws by making the journey and was jailed on Monday.

Pictures of his arrival in Ramsey harbour emerged as the island's chief minister condemned his actions.

Howard Quayle said the 28-year-old's four-week sentence sent "a strong signal" to potential lawbreakers.

He said McLaughlan, who took four-and-a-half hours to travel from the Isle of Whithorn to Ramsey on Friday, had shown a "flagrant disregard" for the island's coronavirus laws.

McLaughlan, from Irvine in North Ayrshire, made the 25-mile (40km) crossing despite having never driven a jet ski before and then walked a further 15 miles (25km) from Ramsey to Douglas.

The Isle of Man border is currently closed to almost all non-residents and under emergency laws, those who break the rules face up to three months in jail or a fine of up to £10,000.

Although there are currently four active Covid-19 cases, the island is considered to be free of the virus as all are in isolation and there is no community spread.

With the exception of the border closure, life on the island has gone back to normal for most people - there is no social distancing and large gatherings, including Christmas lights switch-on events, are permitted.

Mr Quayle said he was "astonished" by McLaughlan's "incredibly reckless, dangerous endeavour", which could have led to "others being called upon to risk their lives in a search and rescue operation".

He said the 28-year-old had been aware of the law and "showed a flagrant disregard [by] mixing in the community and potentially putting lives at risk".

"I hope this sends a strong signal to others who do not take our laws seriously or who are mistaken in thinking that the rules do not apply to them," Mr Quayle added.

"nope a case of stupidity lol"

There's romance and adventure in his stupidity.

Of course he shouldn't have done it though...

Nice to see the IOM being strict, this is not the first people to be locked up for breaking their rules.

There has to be more to the story. A jet ski can't go 4.5 hours on a single tank of gasoline? Can it?

"There has to be more to the story. A jet ski can't go 4.5 hours on a single tank of gasoline? Can it?"

Some jet skis have a range of 150 miles.

He had been working there for a time which is how they met, he'd to go back home and he missed her, apparently he'd about 10 mins worth of fuel left when he got there.

Whilst very irresponsible for a host of reasons, it is also kinda sweet that he'd make that effort. He must be very fond of her. It's more romantic than the time Mr KC turned up outside my bedroom window and climbed into my bedroom and spent the night with me, before going home in the early morning, before my parents realised.

Imagine if she'd blocked him once he arrived. I could understand a child wanting to do something like this but generally our sense of responsibility and morality is finely developed before our late 20s.

We've all done stupid things but this is right up there in front. I think I read he thought it would be much quicker than it was.

On a serious note though, I am seriously considering attempting to find a LEGITIMATE and official reason to relocate there permenently right now. I suppose the first step will be to find a job that my limited capabilities are suited to- and which cannot reasonably take place anywhere other than on the island. Watch this space...

Near Wells

Not only did he spend over 4 hours on a jet ski. Once he'd arrived at Ramsey in the Isle of Man, he then had to walk 15 miles as his girlfriend lived in Douglas??

He should have at least isolated for 14 days like the rules say for IOM if you have been on mainland so it wasn’t just that he missed his girlfriend that he broke the rules it was so he could socialise too

he had already been informed of the rules before he travelled and had not been allowed to travel to the island because he had no where to isolate on arrival.

no connections to the island either.

He has been sent home and told that he can’t come back to the island.

As for the jet ski I don’t know what has happened to it, maybe it was crushed like the girlfriend

Here's me thinking romance is dead!! Some effort from this guy to see his girl.

His work permit would have gotten him back over there on 11th January or something, so not a very smart move - since he's now permanently banned? x

he wont have a work permit for the island as they are for permanent jobs.

he could have had an exemption, but the rules changed and he was refused an exemption to come over.

FFS, anyone that thinks he traveled that far / long in quote "6' high waves,no sat nav, unable to swim, in a trench coat, decided to walk to Douglas etc ...NONE of which can be cooberated. Now lets think, Scottish fishing boat, drop off 1-2 miles off Ramsey, (which can be seen with the naked eye), Taxi to Douglas and maybe delivering a parcel??. He was working in the Island just a few weeks before, so def knew the layout and had a few "friends" to assist. Start to make a bit more sense??

"No evidence at all to support the theory"

The first two lines are from his own statement. The rest is a reasonable and far more realistic alternative.

Finally,Give just one good reasonable, why he would choose to walk from Ramsey - Douglas??
