So can I ask you what you feel is a safe speed to drive down a single country lane?

Only reason I asked was because I had two cyclists having a go, called me all sorts and told me I was spending.

Not going to say yet, the actual speed I was going.

I live in The New Forest. We have a 40 mph limit. At this time of year the ponies, donkeys and cattle love licking the salt of the road. At night max is about 20, even with xenon,led. If you hit them it is your fault and you have to pay. If you do not stop it is a hit and run and you go to jail... No passing go.

Diagonally Parked in a Parallel Universe

My village is 3 miles down a single track road with passing places. A few weeks ago I saw two lycra-clad members of the head-down-arse-up brigade. The road is straight and I saw them from about half a mile away. I slowed down from 40mph to about 20mph. They were riding two abreast. The guy in the middle of the road was furiously pointing to my nearside verge trying to get me to pull over.

I didn't, for two reasons. On my nearside was a narrow grass verge with a 3 meter deep ditch beyond, and on their nearside was a passing place they could have used.

As my profile photo shows I’m a cyclist. For every bad driver there is equally a bad cyclist.

I would like added to driving lessons, especially buses and trucks where the learner driver stands at the side of the road and the vehicle is driven past them at the national speed limits for the road just so you know how that feels. I am sure then drivers may give more room on passing cyclists.

I agree. but also pedestrians. I walk along a pavement of a narrow country road to collect my son from school.

If it is wet and there are puddles on the verge I now hold my phone up so drivers think I am filming and now never get drenched

Depends on the speed limit and also if approaching a corner, I drive on them regularly doing deliveries and wouldn't fly round a corner at high speed because anything could be just around that corner

I reckon in and out no more than 60 times a minute....otherwise it is a bit frantetic!!!

Ohhhhh. In a car.....same as behind the hedgerows!!

No realistically depends on lane width. (And although I cyle, many cycle tandem width 2x2) which is dangerous and means very little space to get by. People have yo step on gas!!

The question is too broad there are so many variables and extenuating circumstances it is impossible to find a one size fits all speed

Oh this 100%! Nothing worse meeting someone who's just passed a passing place, then they expect you to reverse 1/4 mile because they can't figure out how to go back 10 paces.

Depends on visibility, conditions, lighting, car conditions, other road users or pedestrians present, is it straight,? is it bendy.? Is it dry? Is it slippery? What's the weather doing? Type and size of vehicle?

Could be as low as 5mph or probably on a straight road,with good visibility and no other road users etc up to 50mph....imho.

I always drive down country roads using a very simple plan.

Drive like there's an asshole coming in the other direction who is speeding and doesn't give a fuck about anyone else.

This has served me well in the 34 year's I have been driving.

Worst area for assholes.

Surrey and in and around Basingstoke.

Speed limits are a suggestion not a right of the driver to go at that speed.

All road driving conditions differ and it's up to the driver to drive accordingly so you can stop in a safe controlled manner if you need to.

Single country roads could have mud from farmers fields , high verges, sharp bends, horse riders, escaped farm animals etc.

You'll know in your heart of hearts if you were driving in a safe manner for the conditions or if you were in the wrong

Lots of single lane country roads here, if it’s straight and I can see far ahead then 40+ depending on the length of the straight, but then on blind bends I can be as slow as 5-10 mph, tractors with a rear mounted plough aren’t what you want to bump into.

As for the cyclist issue, if it’s single lane you shouldn’t be passing them until there’s a passing place

I got told fucking wanker, speeding twat, dropped my delivery and caught up with them 10 mins later as they were stopped at a junction

I told them what speed I was going and was told too fast snd then a few more swear words

I cycle everywhere as never driven and not all but alot of drivers are not good around cyclists! They drive to close/cut me up constantly x

Bearing in mind my job dictates driving to remote places to deliver equipment and produce that is necessary, this one in question was about 3 miles

The golden rule is that you should be able to stop on your side of the road within the area you can see is clear. On a single track road you should be able to stop within half.of the distance you can see is clear. And of course the speed limit.for.the road is the maximum legal speed

Really depends on viability to me, if I can see clearly and it's national speed limit then I'm doing that as I do deliveries also. If approaching blind corners I slow down and creep around them and also slow down when passing cyclists and walkers to about 25-30 and give them plenty of room

We live on these type of roads & around forty is at the faster end of the locals speed. The local cycle club also know the road & rarely are they two abreast, that’s usually the holiday crowd.

Any cyclist riding two abreast down a country lane expecting me to stop for them would just get the finger, if they drop to single file & I can’t get past safely I’ll happily stop for them then.

I’ve been a motorcycle courier in London, white van man & HGV driver & have one rule when on the road.

“Never argue with something bigger or harder than your mode of transport”..

Many cyclist don’t seem to understand this basic rule of staying alive longer though.

If it’s bendy then much slower. Taking out a cyclist, cow or pheasant etc. really buggers up one’s car

On a standard width road (ie big enough for white lines down the middle) I’d agree. Down a country lane of twists & turns, hedgerows, narrow sections & passing places I’d say it’s not.

We travel six miles on just such a road just to go to the local shops. One thing I have found since living here though is that my car can stop a damn site quicker at 30mph than a cyclist can.

What’s that unwritten rule?

“Only travel as fast as your eyes can see in case you need to stop”.

That’s the thing I live on a dingle country lane."

There's a lot of variables to it as well, how well you know the roads, how good the vehicle is, and how good and experienced you are behind the wheel

You have to be able to stop within the part of the road you can see because something might be coming round a bend. Therefore it is not one speed along an entire road. You can go faster on straight bits with a view a long way ahead.

The highway code the driving manual and Roadcraft all say you should drive at a speed that allows you to stop in the distance that you can see to be safe,

so if you can only see 50 feet youu need to be driving at a speed that alows you to stop in 50 feet

I hate single track lanes. I spend the entire time praying I don’t come across a tractor and have to reverse!!!

I usually go a nervous 25 - 30mph, depending on width and visibility and if the road/track is gritty.

I would like added to driving lessons, especially buses and trucks where the learner driver stands at the side of the road and the vehicle is driven past them at the national speed limits for the road just so you know how that feels. I am sure then drivers may give more room on passing cyclists.

As I say I’m a cyclist and a driver and I see fault on both sides

Ok so I was doing between 20-25 max in 3rd

I got told fucking wanker, speeding twat, dropped my delivery and caught up with them 10 mins later as they were stopped at a junction

I told them what speed I was going and was told too fast snd then a few more swear words

20-25 too fast, you can do that on a bike

Can I ask you what speed you feel vehicles should drive in these lanes?

Bearing in mind my job dictates driving to remote places to deliver equipment and produce that is necessary, this one in question was about 3 miles

Also have to do 70 plus a day...

Really depends on viability to me, if I can see clearly and it's national speed limit then I'm doing that as I do deliveries also. If approaching blind corners I slow down and creep around them and also slow down when passing cyclists and walkers to about 25-30 and give them plenty of room"

Depends on many factors. Weather, visibility, road conditions etc.

A speed limit is a maximum and it is much more important to drive within ability and conditions.

The safe speed is where you can safely pull up to a halt within the distance you can see ahead.

Hate to break it to you but if you don't like the speed limit in place for where you live and expect people not to drive at that speed when it's the legal limit then maybe you should move and not be so uptight about it as you don't make the rules

As a cyclist and a ride leader and motorist a car coming down a lane, especially a blind corner is really intimidating... It's a ton + of steel traveling at speed and some lanes can leave you with no where to go. The advice in this is for cyclists to take the road and prevent overtaking until they feel it is safe enough for a vehicle to overtake. As a driver I am aware that this can be frustrating, but common sense has to prevail, narrow lanes means much lower speeds especially this time of year with mud and water on the road.

60 mph is a speed limit, not a recommended driving speed!

You are allowed to drive up to a speed of 60 mph where it is safe to do so, which isn't too often on many of the country lanes I've driven in 40+ years of driving.

Plenty of reviews & motoring/cycling forums on line that discuss this subject quite often.

It's down to common sense really, just because you think you're good driver, feel safe & have a vehicle that supposedly stops quickly & safely, doesn't mean you will!

Weather & road conditions make a hell of a difference as well, under all circumstances.

Most important thing above all, for all road users, is observation.

Think before you act & if in doubt think again! After all you don't really want to kill or maim someone or even an animal do you?

I refer to the primary position for a cyclist which is centre of the left lane, and just off centre of a single file lane. I am not condoning holding up traffic or impeding progress of other road users but just waiting until there is a safe place for a car to over take and slow to let them do so safely. I drive a van so I get that narrow lanes and cyclists can slow you down but it's about taking care of every one. What's more important, waiting a minute to over take or the safety of another human being who has a family, kids and a mother?

Tnink it's not about drivers and cyclists but looking after other human being the same way we would want our families looked after and respected in that situation.

you should read up on the road positions of cyclists. secondary is the normal position not primary. suggest the various training courses available.

then the cyclist is required to move over and allow a safe pass, the highway code even says to pull over and stop to allow a pass.

cyclist safety starts with the cyclist.
