Gamers.. I need your help.

I'm totally clueless and google has just confused me more. Hoping that some gamers on here may be able to help.

This year one of my sons has only just decided what he wants for Christmas. A VR headset. Now these come in so many variations and price ranges. He's got an xbox one and an iPhone 5 or 6 maybe I don't know. What can I get him that he can do stuff with but isn't over about £80. Keeping in mind he also wants a new controller and a drone!

Help!

You're not going to get a decent VR headset for £80 unfortunately Even the Oculus Quest which recently had a sequel released is still going for over £200.

Hiya,

VR comes in many flavours and you’re not going to get much for under 100 I’m afraid.

You start right at the bottom of the market where the headset is simply a holder for a mobile device such as a phone but there’s very limited interaction with it. It’s mainly a passive experience.

Next up you have what we call “stand alone” systems that are self contained and do not require any other equipment. This is typically your oculus go, quest and quest 2 products.

Go was the first to be launched and is pretty out of date now. You may be able to get a second hand one from eBay just over £100.

Quest came next and is very respectable. It comes in two versions based on the amount of storage. Expect to pay in excess of £200 for a second hand one of these.

Quest 2 has just been released before Xmas and is a hot ticket item so expect to pay over the odds if you can get hold of one.

Next up are you systems that require a computer or console for the to run. The PlayStation VR is a good example of this. The good thing about the PS is that you know if you plug it in the PS is powerful enough to run it but if you go for one of the many PC versions you have to have a pretty powerful computer for it to run with any degree of stability.

It’s a big topic I’m afraid and a bit of a minefield , don’t know if thats any help?

I would probably say tell him that he could get a drone OR a headset but not both. At least that way he'd get a decent one of either

I’ve got the Quest 2 think about the memory on the device as well, as you can get the 64gb for £299 or the one I bought with I think 256gb for an extra £100 at £399.

I love it as it’s an immersive game play but be aware that you can also get motion sickness and both my lads (7 & 11) get nosebleeds if they play more than half an hour with the headset on.

They’re great but fully charged about 2 1/2 hours game play, love mine but they’re not for everyone

It’s not compatble with the ps5 and they are disconting PS4vr for a new ps5 vr head set and stoping make games for ps4vr

Look in to dj i spark it tiny and children friendly its 80 pound exactly

Dji makes good and safe machines

There are cheaper one on Amazon

That's incorrect.

It is compatible you just need an adapter which they will send you for free.

The games do and will work, but annoyingly you need the PS4 controllers for it.

The reason for all of this is that it's all working via there backwards compatability systems.

PSVR2 is apparently on the way, but they have nothing to announce yet (though there are a number of interesting patents)

Agreed. PSVR2 is likely going to use different (much better) tech, so it can't be compatible.

But PSVR2 is some time off yet (hasn't even been officially announced) and in the mean time games are still being made for PSVR1 and can still be used on the PS5.
