Try flex your abs as you come up for extra purchase,

After a while your muscle will allow you to come up further,

Sit on a chair close to the edge but not on the edge. Hold the side frame with your hands either side of the chair. Now extend your legs out slight lift of the ground and now draw them in towards your chest and at the same time move forward slightly. Hold count to 3 now extend your legs back out again and as you do lean back in the chair so your whole body is at an angle. Once you build the strength hold for a little longer. Once core muscles are used to the exercise try riding a bike, or knees up first to the left and then to the right. Once you get past the pain barrier get on the floor and do sit ups and crunches. Same as on the chair but you are on your back on the floor.

To the chaps who mentioned the exercise, are crunches better or the full sit-up? I'm thinking I ought to, perhaps, try and see if I actually have muscles. Plenty of skin and bones, just not sure if the muscles are actually there.

Crunches on a swiss ball are the safest and instead of increasing sets/reps take through a range of progressions with weights and complexities

"Crunches on a swiss ball are the safest and instead of increasing sets/reps take through a range of progressions with weights and complexities "

To tone the muscles, if there are no weights, what are the "complexities"? Do you mean simply slowing down and holding each 'crunch'?

if you are just starting out then make the exercise as easy as possible then progress..

tuck your feet under something , bent your knees up moving your ass nearer your feet.. put your arms clenched behind your neck..

each week straighten your legs a little until fully extended, then progress to moving your arms out in front of you as you raise ..

get those abs burning !

No, there are so many crunch progressions? Slowing down any exercise is a good starting point?

Like most things it will get easier. Hook your feet under something. Try partial sit ups, crunches, until you gain more stamina.

Another tip for you op, when finished your sit up exercise, roll over and try a plank, build up your time on it,aim for 30 sec and work it till you can manage 2 minutes. this will strengthen your core and make the sit ups easier,

Sit ups are very difficult to perform without putting your lower back at risk. For a stronger "core" deadlifts, squats cable crunches, if you dont have access to a gym, try variations of the plank.

Sit ups can be really bad for your lower back as already mentioned - a friend of mine is a professional body builder and he recommends never doing sit ups. At all.

Google core strength exercises for alternatives. You don't need to do sit ups to firm up your stomach area.

Those ab cruncher things are good to get started. I can't lose that annoying back fat! I've found only thing to really drop weight is to quit the booze, otherwise it just goes straight back on. No booze in covid is pretty tough!

Give up dairy, and ideally meat. Giving up dairy can seriously reduce your fat levels (I'm a boring weird vegan)
