"I once remember hearing Paul Young doing a version of Love Will Tear Us Apart/Joy Division....it was truly fucking awful...I can't stress how bad it was! Same as no one could do his song "where ever i lay my hat" justice. " Paul Young didn't record the original "Wherever I lay my hat", it's a Marvin Gaye tune. IMHO the Paul Young cover is better than Marvin Gaye's original. E

"I will start this off with Frankie goes to Hollywood: The power of love. Even if it was for a Christmas advert. " I nearly cried when that came on the radio yesterday! No songs should be covered, unless by a covers band. That would definitely save on the heartache of hearing a great song slaughtered, despite there being some great covers

"I’ probably the only person in the world that dislikes Disturbed’s version of The Sound of Silence, that’s Art n the little fella at their very best, it’s just not right anyone else singing those angelic high notes " Ordinarily, I'd agree with a huge NO to any cover version of an original. However, I actually like Disturbed's version, because it is different, not just trying to copy the original! Similarly, Derek and the Dominos version of Hendrix's Little Wing.....vastly different!

I just remembered IT HAS, by Gregorian monks, so it is a very apt funeral son, and Demi Rousos too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNgU3ojwlCM I'll Find My Way Home is a song written by Jon Anderson and Vangelis for the Jon and Vangelis' 1981 album The Friends of Mr Cairo. The song was released on December 1, 1981. It has been later covered by numerous artists, including Demis Roussos, Chayanne, Gregorian, Project Pitchfork and Spanish singer Ana Belén. The song is also featured in the movie The Challengers. Never knew about the others. Those two songs are my funeral playlist. because the first time I heard them, they were on the radio one melting into the other. Truly magical and really personal to me there and then. I can't remember which once was first... Just the opening six lines are enough to leave you with more questions than answers...the whole song could be performed on the shrink's couch and should be on somebody's syllabus resulting in one helluvas thesis. You ask me where to begin Am I so lost in my sin You ask me where did I fall I'll say I can't tell you when But if my spirit is lost How will I find what is near... On a side note, Donna Summer really made The State of Independence become better than the original and almost her own song.

"I was basing my comment on that fire and skill album. Still having nightmares from that version of Start !! What's the other album you refer to ,m" Oh the cover of Start! was awful but some of the other tracks were good. The other album is a charity one in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust and other charities featuring mostly unsigned bands doing the covers - there have been several albums each one with covers of a different artist (Madness, The Specials, The Beat, The Jam, The Clash have all been featured amongst others) - just Google "Specialized Gifted A Tribute To The Jam" and you should find The Jam one - as ever with that sort of thing it's a mix of good and bad (and Pretty Green doesn't fare any better here either!!) but worth a listen

" A decent cover can bring a whole new perception to a song, and change the way you think about the original. " Agree totally - for me the sign of a good cover is when you sit and think "I know this song" but can't immediately think why. As I said further up, I love covers that put a new spin on the original and don't see the point of the effectively karaoke straight covers - Uptown Girl by Westlife is a good example of the latter

"Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd. " This has been covered quite a few times, as listed on the secondhandsongs website. Bands such as Queensryche/Dream Theater, Scissor Sisters and scouse band Ananthema. Anathema seems to have done a better job, than the Scissor Sisters, who made their version sound more like the Bee Gees. As a side note, my cousin toured with Anathema as their bass player in the early noughties.

I hadn’t come across that one before, it’s the best cover of zombie I have heard, probably because it wasn’t an attempt to be a carbon copy. "You'll be telling me you saw Bowie supported by Roxy next. Or Cockney Rebel supported by the Dolls. Grrr... I saw Lindisfarne live, their support group was an up and coming act by the name of Genesis " I think we had same upbringing...great & varied music from an early age. A friend & I were lucky, both had older siblings so allowed to go to gigs with them from a young age. I remember Feb 71 Winter Gardens Bournemouth.. Van Der Graaf Generator with both Lindisfarne & Genesis supporting. Year later Genesis again at Village Bowl 2 weeks later same venue but Curved Air! So many others over the following years, too many to mention but great bands, quality music that was so raw, new, different & in some cases outrageous! Some of the kids today just don't get it!!!

"anything by bruce springsteen" I yield to no man in my admiration of Springsteen but Johnny Cash's cover of I'm on fire is outstanding.
