If Die Hard is not, then neither is It's a wonderful life. As the story and plot would still work even if the setting was not christmas. It just so happens to be Christmas when he decides to do so.

Set at Christmas? Check

Lots of use of decorations? Check

Christmas music? Check

Lots of dialogue relating to Christmas? Check

Feature a ‘Christmas miracle’? Check

Main plot focuses on family reunion? Check

Snow? Not quite, but falling paper money made to resemble snow while ‘Let it Snow’ plays over it

It’s a Christmas film. Really wish people would stop pretending it isn’t, “cuz guns”.

I think it is, but I guess it depends what each individual deems to be a Christmas film.

It's set at Christmas, it has Christmas music, the story line only makes sense at Christmas and it gets watched a lot at Christmas.

It's much more of a Christmas film than It's a Wonderful Life, which many people think 'is' a Christmas film.

However, that is mostly not set at Christmas, Christmas doesn't play a pivital role in the story and the only reason it was often played at Christmas was the owners forgot to renew the rights to it, so it ended up being free for TV stations to show and help them fill out their Christmas schedules.

Yep.

If it's not a Christmas film, then neither is Home Alone as the same story could have easily been told around a summer holiday. Christmas is even less important to that film than Die Hard.

Yup, it's a Christmas film. The fundamental crux of the terrorists attacking then is key as the it's the only time security is lax for the building.

McClane is coming to visit his family, whos wife is called Holly, for goodness sake.

The underlying message is the theme of love and family, which cannot be better demonstrated than the way it's the release of the expensive watch Holly is given by Ellis, that sends Hans plummeting to his doom. Love triumphs over material possessions.

It is more worthy of being a Christmas film than Home Alone, because as someone said above, the plot of a kid being left home could happen at numerous points throughout the year.

I first saw Die Hard during one of my better Christmas periods, family and friends, decent parties and romance in the air. So watching the film brings back those happy memories as a photo album of memories can.

I saw Lethal Weapon (another disputed Christmas Film) one Christmas with the love of my life, she and me are no longer together but when we both sat down to watch it one Christmas Eve I still remember watching it with her, in a dingy little flat, sharing a bottle of wine. So it’s familiar plot and endless rewatching over Christmas gives me some comfort now I’m predominantly on my own.

So for me they are Christmas films and I’ll enjoy those two this weekend

Do you get the warm fuzzies from watching it?

Can we all stop pretending that it is a Christmas film? "

It's definitely a Christmas film.

Just like RoboCop.

It's set at Christmas.

At a Christmas party.

Of course it's a bloody Christmas film! And thankfully, no warm fuzzies except right at the end!

Exactly this. And it has Christmas songs in it. "

And Alan Rickman (RIP)

"Some people have a funny idea of what Christmas really is "

Christmas is open to interpretation. It only really exists because back in the roman empire they wanted a new Christian celebration to push out the pagan celebration of winter solstice.

Is it to celebrate the birth of a fictional character (who was not even born in December)?

Is it about making capitalism even stronger by going out and buying all sorts of shite?

Is it about giving and receiving gifts?

Bottom line is, Christmas is different to everyone. For some it is not even a thing. People are free to view it however they wish.

Christmas movies are usually about people coming together after adversity. Therefore in my thoughts it is a Christmas movie. Merry Christmas everyone xx

Gruber's gang in Die Hard needed the reduced security and number of employees in the building for a nighttime Christmas party for them to get into the building easier, but they also needed enough employees at the party to create a hostage situation that would get the FBI out so they could turn off the power, letting them drill into the vault.

You take Xmas out and they don't have their opportunity to make their heist. And again, McClane is in that building specifically because it's Christmas to see his wife and kids at christmas because its Christmas time.

Best explanation for it, therefor its a Christmas movie haha

I was definitely in the Christmas film, until I looked into the plot again,

Bruce Willis running round a darkened tower at night, trying not to be caught by Alan Rickman

Die hard is a Harry Potter film
