Anyone know why it’s so expensive yet ?

Because the printer itself is a cheap purchase, profit is made on the ink not the printer.

Isn't it the same as razors and cartridge razor blades. No money in the actual printer as it's a one off purchase. The money is in the consumables.

My friend has an awesome printer. I cant remember which brand. I think it was an hp. Had never seen one before. That has external ink tanks, that you literally just top up from bottles. He says it's so much cheaper and seems to use next to no ink. The printer was obviously more expensive. But That's what I'm gonna plump for next time.

It is so silly! Also some cartridges are "artificially empty". On my old printer I updated the firmware and taped over the cartridge contacts when it claimed empty, and it went for a hundred pages more!

Printing is such dodgy business

Yes. The money is in the ink. For photos it usually works out cheaper to get them printed by a company than printing them yourself. If you mostly print b&w it's cheaper to get a b&w laser printer.

I don’t print things so I don’t know.

I can offer my own experience with a similar product, nails.

Paslode sell you a gun for a few hundred pounds which seems like a good deal but then you have to buy the nail cartridges and gas from them and they are sooooo expensive.

I use my trusty hammer and buy boxes of loose nails that cost around twenty seven times less than buying paslode cartridges.

It’s a lot more work but I make a lot more money.

Hope this helps.

Being in the building trade most of my life I can relate more to this.

There and to the left a bit

I signed up to HP's link scheme - costs £1.99 a month and for that you're allowed to print 50 pages per month (which is more than enough for me) and they monitor the ink levels and automatically send you new plus provide support if the printer fails etc.

Obviously depends how much you use it as to how good value it is but works for me

It's got 1% of Peruvian yak semen in it that can only be collected on one day of a leap year when it coincides with a full moon, between 3 and 4 am by a virgin in high heels, stockings and suspenders

The real thing that adds to the cost though, there are only 3 virgins in Peru.

That’s because there is more technology in the cartridges than the printer.

Ink cartridges cost less than a dollar according to a former HP help desk employee who decided to tell the world. So once they have locked to into needing their cartridges, they will happily rip you off. Cartridges are almost pure profit. It's worth selling their printers at a loss in order to get revenue like that.

Not sure about the 7th but higher still up the list in terms of profit will be syphon fizzy drinks at the cinema/pub - something like an 800% profit on those

We switched to an Epson one that uses bottles of ink rather cartridges at the start of lockdown version 1.0. It has saved a fortune on printing costs what with working from home and homeschooling.

It was reflected in the price though, the printer was £200 whereas the same spec printer which took cartridges was £60.

More pertinent is the 9th most costly liquid...nail varnish!!

And Tippex is only just outside the Top 10!!

We do that as well but we have 100 pages. Very good value and great knowing you'll never run out. I have 2 teens one is gcse, one is A level so they print loads of stuff.

"Because the printer itself is a cheap purchase, profit is made on the ink not the printer.

The printer is considerably more complex than a single ink cartridge yet the cost difference doesn't reflect that - especially given the economies of scale that you'd expect with only one printer being sold but many cartridges.

I use Colour Direct ink. It works out about 20% of the price of Epson’s ink. I buy it in bulk and it last about 18 months.

Just refill the cartridges. The actual ink isn't exactly expensive and it's far better for the environment.

Alternatively you can use recycled ink cartridges if you wish to save money and the environment but don't wish to refill them yourself .

Most cartridge heads will last for several tanks worth of ink as long as they have never been left to dry out.
