"snip... Don't try to repair(defrag/fix bad sectors)/recover/factory reset the laptop. snip... Good luck" Don't try to repair it until you have had a go at sucking the contents off first.

"From what you ahove said - it sounds like the laptop won't boot. The rest of the contents on the disk *should* be ok. Don't try to repair(defrag/fix bad sectors)/recover/factory reset the laptop. If you have another computer/laptop and a USB hard drive docking station - you can remove the drive from the 'broken' laptop and add it as a USB drive. You should then be able to get the important stuff from it and save it somewhere else. I managed to recover 90% of my niece's photos and university dissertation using this method. Good luck" I bought a boot cd and ran a scan and "fixed" some of the errors. It still won't boot, but now I'm worried I've stuffed it based on what you said

I'd still advice trying the external docking station route. I'm assuming the laptop is relatively new and is therefore a SATA drive. Docking stations take both full 3.5" and laptop 2.5" drives (as the connectors are identical).

"Although not in London, my business does computer repairs, but I wanted to post this for reassurance to you. If we refused to fix computers where customers had visited porn sites or web sites that might embarress, we and almost every other computer shop would never do a computer repair. Generally speaking we never view pictures, videos or web history, we simply fix the problem that was on the machne, charge the customer and move onto the next one. The only time you would have a problem is if you have illegal information on the computer that we came across in the course of doing our repair. The most obvious is Child Porn, which is a reportable offence. But believe me, if you have some films of a porn star having sex or even you and wife/GF/Swing Partner having fun, in our professional role we really aren't interested. So just take it in anywhere and go and get it fixed." That has put my mind at ease - thanks!!!

" A Dell Latitude D420 - about 5 years old." Looks like it is a PATA (non serial drive). The docking station solution probably won't work. I use have a different adapter for that Google "USB2 to PATA"
