So now that Bake Off is finished and there's nothing good on TV, I thought I'd take the plunge and try some baking myself.

Now I know many of you consider me to be quite the renaissance man but I haven't baked a thing in my entire life.

So, with that in mind, what do you think is the easiest cake to bake to start with?

I'm looking for something that's not going to leave me in floods of tears with only a spoonful of sugar to show for it.

You never know, my manual dexterity could improve so much over the festive period that I could become quite the master baker.

La la land

A good Victoria sponge, relatively easy but not everyone makes a good one imo.

Victoria sponge is probably the easiest.

Newport Pagnell

In terms of cake victoria sponge is probably your best bet, but shortbread is quicker and easier (and dare I say tastier).

Have you ever used a Betty Crocker cake mix before? If not that's a good starting point. Cake is life isn't it OP?

Lemon drizzle is fairly straightforward and a lot more forgiving than a Victoria sandwich. DON'T use packet mixes.

Brownies or cookies are a great place to start!

They're REALLY hard to fuck up!

Kind of to be honest. Maybe not a cake mix... what cake do you like OP?

I can cook flapjacks, I don’t know if that’s classed as a cake, I do a proper big batch, I do the mix in a big Casserole dish, so they last all week, I add whole world peanut butter cause it hasn’t got any added sugar, also I add a mixture of seeds. I find they are a good slow release of energy through the day.

This is my one serious answer of the week, I was going to mention cream horns but I don’t want to lower the tone.

Under the Duvet

Victoria sandwich is easy. Same amounts of self raising flour , sugar, butter plus two eggs. Mix it all together and bung in sandwich tins for 15 mins.

Cool and fill.

For first time buy a Jane Asher Lemon Drizzle cake mix in a box. You just empty into a bowl, add vegetable oil and eggs and put in a tin and bake and then mix the icing and put on top of the cooked, cooled cake.

As good as home made from scratch in my opinion and I have made and decorated cakes to order for weddings and birthdays in the past.

If it then enthuses you to try from scratch have a look at the BBC website for ideas.

4, 4, 4 and 2 is the easiest cake to remember the recipe too and to bake. Flour sugar marg and eggs. If it doesnt rise or gets overcooked its just a thicker biscuit and still edible
