Currently stressed and need some way of managing it.

What do you do in a stressful situation?

Say like a job interview or going to court or something like that.

What coping mechanisms do you have?

Meditation.

I'll go for a walk, have a hot bath, listen to music, whatever, and just breathe. Helps centre me and calm me down.

Listen to chilling music using headphone set. Nice hot bath to chill.

Manchester (she/her)

Meditate, progressive muscle relaxation, adequate sleep and good nutrition. Try to talk myself out of it. Grounding. Dealing with the physical symptoms. Talking myself through my strengths. Exercise

Somewhere near here

A good long walk, meditation just before in the car, big deep breaths and remind myself no one will die if it goes the wrong way.

I’m shocking at interviews but these hugely helped me for interviews for my incredibly competitive degree course

I tend to have a melt down and then build back up from there

It seems to clear my head and give focus

A lot of people view a melt down as a weakness

I think it's quite the opposite

I've eaten, don't have time for a bath to chill but that's a great way to chill out.

My stupid illness stopped the good nights sleep which I think was triggered by anxiety of it all.

I'd forgotten about grounding techniques.

Do you mean stress before something or when in a stressful moment?

I tend to change my mindset and imagine the worst case scenario; example for a job interview - you completely mess up and look like a knob. Well worst case is you feel like knob for a little but you never have to see those people again so its easy to take it as a lesson rather than a failure.

Also, exercise helps a lot. Session at the gym usually gets rid of my stress. Put all that energy into something positive

Exercise of any kind is the mindfulness wonder drug.

I also find that gently shacking the days stresses out of my body as I lay in bed before going to sleep, help me wake up refreshed and streets free ready to start a new day.

A little bit of mindfulness always helps me but if you need to get back into the moment quickly this is a good tip

Count 4 things you can see right now

Count 4 things you can touch

Count 3 things you can hear

Count 2 things you can smell

Count one deep breath

On a mooch

I put on some upbeat, toe tapping music, something I can relate to and lose myself in that, normally clears my head

Somewhere In The Ether…

A diversionary tactic is usually efficacious for me ; It might be something as simple as watching the TV or else playing a game on my phone.

Anything in fact, to redirect the mind for a while

If it's for spontaneous events, breathing exercises will lower your heart rate and calm you down. All to a count of 4 seconds. Slowly in, hold, slowly out, hold, slowly in, etc.

That's exactly what I'm doing being in the forums and playing a game while I wait.

interview - swot up, do prepare, do your homework, practice breathing, get there early, find some quiet space to chill before your start

court - can't do a lot, if your telling the truth, you've nothing to get stressed over. if not telling the truth, they will find out and you've reason to stress

Long walks with my dog out on the hills and mountains . Works wonders . Even with out a dog would recommend it . Getting back into nature works wonders for mind and soul . Got that from bear grillys but it’s very true

A method I use alongside some of those mentioned is to do something creative.

Personally for me it’s painting miniatures (yes, I’m that much of a nerd!) but it could be anything such as doodling, sketching, writing etc.

It helps me focus on something that isn’t stressful

A bimble on the bike for me! Though i rarely get stressed.

It is definitely a mood lifter! 5 mins on the bike and I am smiling.

Works well for headaches too! Not sure of it clears it or, I am just concentrating to much to notice!

Have you tried the Calm app?

I started using it back in March & found it great. I'm a meditation convert! There's all sorts on there though.

Lots of good advice on here.

Deep breathing and exercise do help.

I read something a while ago that its not the situation that is stressful...its your response to it that creates the stress. This has helped me rationalise a few situations.

Thank you all. I've got a few bits out of that some I already do and was looking for something different. I think I'll have a go at the calm app too. I've got two more stressful things coming so being prepped will help. I'm glad today's is done. 1 down 2 to go.

Pukka Organic Latte Cacao Maca. Its like cocoa but it has extra things in it to destress you. One of them in Ashwagandha which lowers your cortisol levels and helps you sleep. I make it with two teaspoons of honey as its quite bitter otherwise. I'm out like a light within an hour of having it. Stress mainly effects my sleep so that alone makes me feel better but I do feel less stressed overall when I have it.

Thank you. I'm usually OK but today was something new and I hadn't realised how anxious I was about it till it all hit me.

Defo have some new things to try from this thread.

Meditation being the main one.

Long walks with music / audio books

If I'm stressed I have to get out of the house and active.

Maybe a bike ride too - but I prefer when I can listen to something whilst moving.

Meditation changed my life I used to be a real wreak before interviews and and social stuff really but now I just take the time to empty my mind of all the nonsense I feel like a new person definitely try it....see if you can find a guided one to start with as that helps

Honestly, if I'm suffering uncontrollable anxiety (especially if I can't sleep) I get up and do some cleaning. When I feel overwhelmed by things, cleaning is something I can control when there's lots of things I can't control. Avd it's kind of medatitive. Even emptying and cleaning out a cupboard or doing the skirting boards. If it's day light and not too cold, do a bit of ing. Seems to put things in perspective for me.
