The lines of what are national waters are well established and accepted. Its the quotas of what each nation is allowed to catch and where. So UK fishing has rights to catch fish out of territorial waters and other EU countries have rights to catch in UK waters.

These quotas are based on what was caught in 1970 or so.

Its further complicated by the fact that some UK vessels have sold their quota to EU vessels and a lot of yhe UK quota isn't actually caught. I believe its less than 40% of the UK quota actually caught by UK vessels

Thank you for your serious answer! I must admit I’m still not quite sure how this will be settled. I listened to an hour of for and against arguements about fishing and think my view is that we should protect what is ours even though it’s a small industry in the big picture that may mean no deal. If they give up then it’s a slippery (!) slope to eu ( and French) piss taking.

The actual total GDP of the British fishing industry is less than the annual takings of Harrods

Yes this was mentioned but do we think that the French should be allowed to continue to fish in our waters post Brexit... surely fishing could be built up again without eu restrictions. One of these fishing towns Grimsby I think used to be the biggest fishing port in the world!?

And it’s an historic industry... that produces a useful product that people can eat instead of gold plated candles and luxury crap that we don’t really need... the more I think about it we need fishing in the uk...

As a Hull boy I wholeheartedly agree, not many fishing ports have something to fall back on, like many in Cornwall

It's all nonsense. If we want a deal with the EU then we have to give them something and fishing rights aren't worth that much. It's been calculated that for what Brexit has already cost the UK we could give everyone in the fishing industry £15M to just go away. It's also worth pointing out that a large number of those people are foreign workers, the ones Brexiters want rid of.

A box at end of your bed

Not the first time this argument has been had I remember them from way back before we joined the EU, fishing boats blocking the ports and harbours. Theses days most fish taste like plastic anyway as that's what they are living among and eating.

UK territory waters extends 200miles it not as much about as keeping it for our boats to fish in but what will they give us in return for allowing them to fish it our waters, so far the EU seem not to recognise that we are now a sovereign state. As pointed out in the thread our fishing fleet is tiny in comparison to the whole of the GDP, but we want a good trading deal with the EU, the EU want to fish our waters a deal should be done unless one side will not give an inch and that seems to be the EU.

It’s about sovereignty and unfettered access to sovereign territory. Access will be granted to any nation willing to pay but the UK won’t accept open borders for just the EU who give us 15% of their catch. It’s not just around the UK either but the rich waters around the Falkland Islands and other UK territory too.

The unreasonable French demands at the last minute we’re added because the EU knows the French will veto.

So no agreement = no deal.

Agreement = French veto = no deal

.. expect a no deal shortly

I was told that most of our fish is landed and sold in france, if they don't get an agreement the French have said they won't unload our boats.
