Just passed an 8 y/o (guessing) on the pavement saying to her mum

"...but 50 shades of Grey is better than the books I get at school mummy!"

An 8 year old that can read?????? Maybe education hasn't gone completely down the toilet then.....

By the way, I pinched all my Dad's Mandingo books and had read them all before I was 10....also was reading James Herbert before I reached double figures

I saw an interview on 'This Morning' a few weeks back and i thought a valid point was raised about where that book should be sold. Its currently in my local Sainsburys right next to children's books, highly promoted. There is no mention on the cover that it contains graphic sexual content and no age restrictions to purchase the book.

Think maybe a sticker on the cover to indicate its adult content would be good. Its only via word of mouth and the various social media's i was aware of what its contents involved

I read James Herbert's The Rats when I was a teenager and my little sister wanted to read it. I refused so my mum told me off for not sharing and made me lend it to her...

...I then got another telling off when she had read it.

Is it actually a bad influence though? I'm sure lots of conservative churchey types would be up in arms at the thought of kids learning about something they don't want them learning about but it's not thoee people that are important, it's the kids...

A lot of children are prolific readers, my daughter being one. She's 13 and has a kindle, it's really difficult to get suitable books and we're quite very liberal. I'd love to see a age rating similar to movies going on books so we'd get an idea of content.

2 women, 2 young girls, 50 meters from my front door, presumably on the way back from picking them up at school. I'm not sure why this is being questioned...would be a really weird thing to make up.

So aye. I'd like to see age guidance stickers too. Leave it up to parents to decide.

I've not read it so I don't really know, but erotic fiction isn't just harmful by definition.

Well I read the comment as if the young child was trying to justify why she should be allowed to read it... Not that she had! She's prob assuming its better than school books x and I'm nr end of book 2 and its not all porn! But makes sam good reading
