"I was diagnosed a few months ago with type 2" well colour me ignorant. i suppose its from years of listening to the mantra that diabetes is weight related, but i really honestly didnt think you could develop it if you were 'small' as it were.

"I had diabetes type 2 for about 17 years. Since ive lost all my weight(ten stone in total) im no longer a diabetic, in fact my blood tests showed no trace. I still have to be checked every three months for a year(got about two more tests to go. But im officially no longer a diebetic. They have put it down to what i now eat." Interesting. My doctor said the other day that as my blood sugar is ok now that i dont have to have the blood test every three months now, but still have to take the tablets though.

The only reason there giving me blood tests every three months is to double check that everything is fine. They dont just sign you off here after just one normal bloody test, but once my year is up i wont have any blood tests for diebitis at all. It takes a year here before they discharge you, but doctor said the other week no trace at all, i think my sugars where 4.5 but cant remember. So no more yucky metformin for me

"my sl reading is 4.0 and has been that for 12 months now. next test is due in august and if so i can come off meds and see how it goes. will be monitored every 6 weeks by the doctor. fingers crossed. good luck with your next tests. x " Brilliant, especially when you sart the medication and you think you will have it for the rest of your life, its 6 months since i came of metformin now Im also off my high blood pressure tablets and cholestral, in fact my cholestral level was only 3.8 so im well chuffed makes it all worht while, hope your tests come back good

I am type 2, I was diagnosed about 5 years ago and take metformin. I am not overweight, eat very well and excercise. I am otherwise fit and healthy and always have been. There are many people with type 2 who have brought it upon themselves through poor diet and weight gain but there are other reasons too; genetic, or hormonal, viral infections and injuries to the pancreas can all lead to type 2 (or similar issues) One interesting recent link is between lack of sleep leading to pre-diabetic state. I understand that there are close to 30 defects and conditions associated with either insulin resistance or insulin deficiency, which are the two basic mechanisms for diabetes so its not quite as simple as Type 1 = X and Type 2 = Y .... causes, effects and prognosis can vary significantly

"I have always been told that once you are Diabetic you are always Diabetic; your blood sugar levels may stabalise (with diet changes, excersise, etc) but you are still Diabetic i.e. your pancreas doesn't repair itself to pre Diabetese levels. " Borderline cases respond better perhaps. Wolf

" Someone else said that a few months ago on the forum so i double checked. I am completely clear and definetly not classed as diabetic although i may get it when im older like lots of people.
