Which do you prefer to be reopened the gyms or the pubs?

For me it's a no brainer, gyms, but interested in hearing what you folks have to say about this.

Gym, simply because I use them more than I do the pub and I think there's more benefit to more people in gyms being open than pubs.

Also, I think the govts guidelines are a nail in the coffin of the hospitality industry.

I thinks that’s like comparing apples with pears.

For the well-being of people I say gyms.

For the livelihoods that are being destroyed I say pubs.

I'm actually surprised that everyone has said gyms so far. I'm always of the belief that British ppl love their pubs above everything else lol.

Btw pubs are annoying these days because they don't let you socialise at all, I don't mind it for a date but definitely not if I'm looking to meet someone new, imo

I love the pub, and can't stand the gym... but if it were a choice between the two, I'd say gyms.

Though personally, I think if they can open then so can pubs (with restrictions)

It's not the pubs themselves that are annoying you, it's the restrictions that allow them to open. Ya know, the rules to keep you, other customers and staff as safe as possible. You shouldn't be meeting anyone new in one anyway, same household/bubble at a table and nobody else.

Gyms absolutely. Not only me, but a lot of people rely on them for their mental health. The amount of cleaning and social distancing in our gym for example. Is a perfect example of why they should never have been closed.

Spot on - really not sure why the three things that always seem to come up in these discussions are gyms, pubs and schools - they're completely different things.

If it was pubs or cinemas, or pubs or bowling alleys I might see more of a connection - but pubs or gyms is two separate questions

Pubs .. Gyms are opening and there is going to be one person on one piece of apparatus at at a time and social distancing of course .. from my experience 'gym' generally is a self serving solo kind of pastime .. so its unlikely to do much to increase peoples social lives ..

Pubs .. more people , chat , socialising and some sort of return to a community feel in villages ..

Keeping the body fit is fine.. but people really need to think about the needs people have just to socialise and be with other people doing no more than having a drink and a chat ..

There isn't socialising at pubs though, and staff have to enforce social distancing and those that don't comply are asked to leave. The most socialising you'll do is with the person taking your order/delivering your food & drinks.

Definitely. The place we're thinking, there's often enough space that tables can be 5m apart, and it's way on top of it in ways some places definitely can't.

We muddle through as best we can and make the best of a bad situation.

I'm not paranoid about catching the lurgy - but I think the sweating and panting and body fluids spraying everywhere in gyms is gross even without a pandemic

Wearing a mask will do very little to protect you - it will only suffocate you.

It's a respiratory illness spread by respiratory particles. Masks, sanitiser and distance reduce risk enormously, is my understanding.

If we want then I'll go with piles of used equipment wipes in the resistance room because apparently people think Mummy lives in the gym

Sure. But I mitigate the risk as best I can, and have been listening to the scientists since March. Masks aren't required but are an additional thing I can do.

Not cleaning up after yourself is just ridiculous though.

I just think what's most important.

The economy

Or

Lives.

People are using the excuse that boredom and not seeing friends is destroying there quality of life. What about the old people and vulnerable that have had to endure it under longer and harder restrictions.

Most of them won't have Skype. How are they going to feel watching the bored ones go out to socialise and exercise while massively increasing the spread of what's going on.

All for a beer a chat and exercise and you can do all of those at home. Its selfish thinking about what you want to do when others don't have that option

My bad, coz you'd said more people I assumed that's what you meant. That still doesn't change the fact that the only other person you'll have contact with other than those in your bubble whom you could see at home is the server, so it really is less of the socialising and now the focus is enjoying a meal safely and a change of scenery.

I know you wouldn’t think it from my body :’)

But I can’t wait for the gym to reopen!

I would love to go for a drink with my partner and just have an evening out and have an excuse to get dressed up but before lockdown I was really working on improving myself and working on my body and without using it as an excuse the lockdown as

Maas shot that right to hell. I can’t believe I’ve essentially wasted a year and I’ve actually ended putting weight on! So I want to get back and get in a routine so that when Christmas is over I can start back as I mean to go on.

Going for a walk isn’t just exercise, it’s spending time with someone, chatting and enjoying the world around you. If people think the only way to socialise is with a drink in their hand, it’s a sad world, but for now you can do that with your household or bubble.

This is pretty much what I've been thinking too. Economical reasons aside, what is it about people that they just can't do without a pub/bar, like it is the only way to socialise.

Of all the things we are missing during this time socialising can be done pretty much anywhere. It is not limited to a specific place.

The gym also has other ways to exercise without going to the gym, however in its defense it is the safest and most effective way to do so due to specialised equipment.

I can understand your dilemma.

But my point is that people want the rules to fit their agenda.

I would like to be able to go clothes shopping and try on clothes etc ..

Is it important - no.

But it's something I would like to do.

The question is Gyms vs Pubs - neither of those are important to me.

Yes, in some cases it's a disability or a safety issue.

Unfortunately because the UK haven't nipped this in the bud, we're having to make compromises as the pandemic drags on.

"I dont go to gyms or pubs so I don't care

Why can't people exercise outside?

Surely there's nothing that can't be done outside other than swimming?

There's lots that can't be done outside, especially not in winter/wet conditions, but I really can't be bothered repeating. Just remember not everyone can go running, walking etc

I can understand your dilemma.

But my point is that people want the rules to fit their agenda.

I've found my anxiety much worse without it. And yes I exercise at home and yes I make do but no it's not the same.

"Pubs ..

Gyms 100%. While I love a pint I really need the gym to get back in shape (cue the responses saying you don't need a gym to get fit... ).

I've already booked double sessions Wed/Thu/Fri this week and I'll be pretty much moving into the place for the next couple of months!

I'll say the pub , the gym being a totally alien concept to me .

When I say pub , I also mean restaurants , bars etc ... I'm so missing socialising with friends and family and also bumping into acquaintances.

Lastly I work in a night club and I'm just desperate to get out of the house and back at work

My nan’s spare room.

I find this a really interesting debate. What’s up with both.

Gym goers are very vociferous in the benefits to mental health of physical exercise. I run 6k a day and go nowhere near a gym.

Yet my mental health is suffering as I’m not meeting my circle of friends that I would during quiz night down my local.

I think ultimately people make an argument to suit their own needs.

Sure. That's definitely true. But the question is which do you prefer. (For some, including in this thread - not me - running is physically not an option)

The disability exemption comes back into play when we go back into tier 3, we just have to hope the school we train in opens up, because it'll be Christmas hols after a couple of weeks. I suspect the school won't open the sports hall till Jan and most of the team's sports wheelchairs are locked up inside

The question was which would you prefer to to be open. Not which is more deserving of being open. A personal choice for one just means it holds more personal importance to the individual. Its not a commentary on the other. Personally I don't go to the pub that much and I don't really miss them. If the question was gyms or swingers clubs on the other hand I would have a tougher time choosing .

Pubs, it is pretty easy to excercise anywhere and it is essentially a solitary activity. Pub’s are social & about being sociable. The Welsh Govt are being idiots saying that Gyms should stay open to support ‘mental health’, Pubs do this way better for many more people

The thread asked which you prefer. I answered. You seem to be determined to say that anyone that wants either is wrong, which is unkind.

You're allowed to like neither, but some have good reason for their preferences as to their leisure activities. Which are preferences, not dictates on you.

There are separate rules for disability sports and sports for U18s, Tom. Neither of those applied in the recent 4wk lockdown, but the rest of the period August to November, training took place for my team mates. I was unable to train. Thursday this week, we can, in theory train. But the too brass want to wait till Jan.

So no Tom, the rules do not apply equally to everyone. Some of us are Special

"You do not need a gym to stay in shape

Correct but the social side is another side to it

Anybody who goes to a gym to socialize has lost the plot

.

I thought people's preferences were sacrosanct on Fab

Not on this thread surely

I don't see why people can't prefer socialising one way or another. Why is that bad, Tom?

What do the rules say?

What do rules have to do with the question I asked you?

Are people not allowed to like what they like?

Like what you like and obey the guidance.. or does it not apply to everyone..

Everyone is special.. do your best to stay safe..

The virus treats everyone equally..

Some of us are Special-er. Sport England says so "

And that gives some sort of immunity to Covid.. grow up

The thread asked which you prefer. I answered. You seem to be determined to say that anyone that wants either is wrong, which is unkind.

You're allowed to like neither, but some have good reason for their preferences as to their leisure activities. Which are preferences, not dictates on you.

That is your interpretation..

Often flawed but yours nonetheless.. "

It's my interpretation that people are allowed to like what they like?

Oh dear.

I have no idea, I've not asked the Covid if it wishes to infect my co-wheelies. Put it this way. Out of the squad, two players have tested positive in the entire pandemic. One is me (mildly ill during March lockdown when training WAS banned). The other caught it in hospital whilst in for planned procedures but she was asymptomatic.

Being a wheelchair user does not make one immediately more susceptible to Covid. Also we train socially distanced. Inside our plastic screens. Whilst shouting "exterminate" at each other

Everyone is special.. do your best to stay safe..

The virus treats everyone equally..

Some of us are Special-er. Sport England says so

And that gives some sort of immunity to Covid.. grow up

My immunity to Covid is antibody mediated, but Sport England issued us all with anti-Covid plastic screening to erect around our wheelchairs. We're more like little Daleks now

I guess you feel safer but does it make it safe ?

Safe as houses. Well, more like one of those plastic greenhouses. Wheelchair basketball is an extremely safe sport. No one ever falls out or breaks bones

But will they catch Covid..?

Lots of pussyfooting here..

I like you. I respect you. I do not care if you like me.

I do not want you to catch Covid.. wheelchair in or not. No concessions . Stay safe x

Agreed.. I never said you were more susceptible.. but everyone can pass it to others.. just follow the rules.. that's my take on it.. for everyone.. we are all special.. even swingdress

The rules are being followed. There is an exemption for disability sports and sports for U18s. Hang on, anyone getting deja vu here?
