"I’ve driven plenty of the Army version of the Defender and they were easily good enough off road for anything I came across in my 13 year career... not sure if the civvie version is the same though " Assuming you’re talking Land Rovers rather than Jeeps

Plenty of off-roaders here put a winch and a snorkel on a LR defender and happily go wherever they like. They’re actually designed for off-road then adapted for the road, unlike the Jeeps which are road vehicles with an off road capability

"We have a battered ex-RAF 110, no longer road legal but it’s great for getting around the farm. The only mod is a bale spike on the back to take hay out to the fields. We call her the underfinch. Mr was gutted when they stopped making the original one and wouldn’t touch the new one with a barge pole. We are going to wait and see what the Ineos Grenadier is like to drive when that comes out. " We looking a a 2000 one I just wanted opinions.

"All old Land Rovers only going up in value now" I like the way it looks but hubby saying off-road capabilities not the same. Huge aftermarket add-ons for jeeps here his excuse.

A 110 is also a pig in a supermarket car park.

You can get a lot of stuff for them maybe not quite as much as a Jeep but still a big selection of accessories. If you buy a Defender, the first thing to do is upgrade the security.

Ik they would be more expensive upkeep here but how prone are they to breaking down.

Ours was serviced regularly but in the the 13 years(that I was there)we ran two different Defenders, and they never broke down between services. I would imagine it's down to how much you abuse it and how well you look after it.

I assuming the defender is the same ruggedness.
