I don’t consider him to be in the top tier of people that have achieved tbh.

65 is still young nowadays ...

Tom

I love the beautiful game and in my younger days played to quite a high amateur level.

Maradona was a good footballer of that there is no doubt but that’s about it. He indulged his popularity with excesses that most would not dream of doing. Comparison with religious figures is stretching it a bit not that I subscribe to that nonsense either.

I can think of other sports people who reached the pinnacle of their chosen discipline who have gone on to use their position to assist and help others.

Just an opinion!

As a footballer Diego Maradona had few if any equals. As a man he was controversial and probably not the best role model. I thought it ironic that he passed away 15 years to the day since the great George Best who only got to 59.As a football fan I think whenever the World Cup comes round I will always think back to when I was 18 years old in 1986 and was memorised by the skill of Diego Maradona. As Lionel Messi said Diego Maradona is eternal

The point is Tommy Essex is that he was a cheat. He took illegal substances on at least two occasions and quite possibly more. Who knows the extraordinary leap to palm the past the England goalie and shortly thereafter ran like a gazelle to score the so called goal of the century may have had added chemical assistance?

External adoration is reserved for those who achieve eliteness without cheating.

Yes he had bundles of talent but for a player with that talent I'd say he wasted it he only scored 5 times in all the world cups he played in and one of those he thought he was playing basketball instead so let's say 4 and a half goals instead

"As a footballer Diego Maradona had few if any equals.

He was a footballer............who used illegal substances to enhance his performance if that qualifies for eternal adoration then half the chaps that I grew up with on Manchester council estate deserve the same recognition?

Did they win the world cup ?

The point is Tommy Essex is that he was a cheat. He took illegal substances on at least two occasions and quite possibly more. Who knows the extraordinary leap to palm the past the England goalie and shortly thereafter ran like a gazelle to score the so called goal of the century may have had added chemical assistance?

External adoration is reserved for those who achieve eliteness without cheating.

Well I cherish and love that moment.. great football and the fact it was against England makes it so much sweeter

He cheated in the quarter final of a World Cup. He took performance enhancing drugs.............if that is your idea of great football you watch a different game to me!"

Not in 86 he didnt

Let's face it what "did" he and any other footballer actually achieve from kicking a ball around a grassy patch.

Simple.....nothing!

Defo rather die at 60 matching his achievements so long as everyone could forget so quickly that i was a cheating, woman beating, drug addict to name but a few negatives.

Absolutely no doubt he had a god given talent and probably the greatest footballer ever but lets not forget the so quickly that he wasnt exactly the greatest human being ever.

Not interested in footballers what so ever.

I'd rather live until 65 and know I'm genuinely loved by my friends and family.

I had to google as I wondered if he had done some amazing community work after praying around with a ball but it appears not.

Well you can do community work and pick up.litter but nobody will remember you..

Diego on the other hand

Read the room no one agrees with you .. shrug

It’s coming from a man who thinks hippos are evil

And a man who gave the excuse that he was cooking lamb chops

Excuse for what, that I ran out of mint sauce ?!

Who knows.. lamb chops pork chops, karate chops. Your business not mine ..

You seem fascinated by my lamb chops, you must have mentioned it a dozen times, so it would appear it is your business. Just try and put the lamb chops behind you and remember the man who you started the thread about and all the wonderful wonderful things he did."

Why do we treasure people who kick a ball around a field so much and yet hate on the folk who organise and run the country. And we hide away the scientists and thinkers who do such great work. We hate the police who protect us, the postman, the engineers who keep things moving. All important cogs imho. I'd rather die in alignment with my fate but appreciating the more important folk who go unrecognised tbh....

What a funny world we live in....
