I'm absolutely useless at this.

I can change a fuse on a plug and that's my limit.

I can paint ok, but ask me to fix something that's broken, no chance.

Lots of other work on as folks want to take advantage of the time afforded by the current Covid situation.

I can do a lot of things, I've renovated two houses so a lot of things I learnt as I went along...I won't mess with electrics as a rule, bar changing a light fitting or socket front, and I haven't attempted plastering yet. But I changed the lock on my front door last week.

I laid all my laminate flooring myself, tiled my kitchen and utility room walls and my storeroom floor.

I think I’m quite competent at most things, or if I’m not I watch videos and learn.

I’m contemplating knocking through my boarded up fireplace, but it makes me nervous so I might get the professionals in for that!

I started a business based on quality work and being reliable. All the contractors I use have the same ethos. Time is money and wasting on frivolous activities is stupid

Getting hold of materials is the main issue now!

I think the trick is to find someone local who knows people

When I first moved in this house, I wanted someone to check the boiler

There is a shop down the road that sells DIY / Hardware

I went in and asked if they knew any domestic gas engineers

They put me in touch with someone who, it turns out, lives about 200 yards up the road

In turn, he has put me in touch with a plasterer, an electrician and a painter / decorator

The decorator has, in turn, put me in touch with a joiner

They've all turned up when they should, done what was asked and haven't been silly with prices

All I need now is someone who does damp proofing and pointing and doesn't want to charge thousands upon thousands to fix one wall

I'm more at the interior design end of household DIY - I've tiled floors and walls, I paint, decorate, renovate furniture, hang shelves, make curtains, lay carpet, basic garden landscaping, that sort of thing.

I know some basic mechanics on older style cars (like changing a fan belt) but I tend to keep that all under wraps - my days of getting my hands dirty are well behind me

I'm a time-served mechanical engineer, working on contractor's plant and I was a JCB hydraulics specialist.

I gave most of my tools away to an apprentice agricultural engineer a few years ago.

The only DIY things around the house I wasn't too good at was plumbing and plastering. I have hung doors, fitted carpets, fitted a kitchen, did some rewiring after removing an internal wall.

I can bake, too!
