RIP to arguably the greatest footballer that has ever lived. To love and appreciate Diego Armando Maradona is to admire the craft, skill and ingenuity of his talent to score the Goal of the Century (and perhaps of all time) and yet the controversial, tongue in cheek response response he gave to the illegal goal he scored with his hand minutes before, by saying "A little bit of the head of Maradona and a little bit with the hand of God"

That game in which Maradona single handedly won that match and produced those 2 legendary goals, encapsulates his entire life. He was a genius with the ball as his feet, but he was willing to break the rules from time to time.

Genius and Controversial, yet universally loved and and respected by his friends and enemies.

RIP Diego Armando Maradona, even at age 60, you have gone to soon ??????

when a city in another country adores you so much they decide just hours after you die to rename the stadium after you...... and the country that you represented gives you 3 days of national mourning, to be followed by a state funeral..... you know you haven't done too badly!!

They wont be mourning half as much as his dealer though.

He did have the best ball control the world has ever seen...and what a character.

the way that he is/was beloved in naples and in argentina.... am i surprised, god no!!!!

you kinda forget that "the hand of god" and "the goal of the century" were only 5 minutes apart.... but it summed up maradona, genius but also flawed.....

I get why people mention the flawed, but today... i choose to celebrate the genius

Exactly.... Highly recommend the 2019 film if you haven’t seen it and want to understand the man. Amazing footballer and (mostly) a really nice guy

RIP Diego Maradona in 1986 I was 18 years old and watching the World Cup my strongest football memories are of Maradona dominating the World Cup I was memorised watching Maradona for me he is one of the top 3 players that have ever played the game.

do you know why it got removed... the only other one i could find had gotten to 175 posts..

anyway as a football fan if you ever get the chance to go to naples do (just once because its a bit rough.. lol) but you do absolutely see that the city loved him... his face is plastered everywhere....

thats why i am not surprised if the san paulo gets renamed...

Yes I too saw the 1986 world cup final on TV with england playing Argentina in the final Diego Marradonna was a great Inspiration to watch play football england were quite a strong squad at that time as they had to be to get where they were, Marradonna,s charge down the wing going around players and then scoreing displayed a talent I had never seen before and certainly have,nt since but the hand of god Incident of course was unfair and unjust for me watching that game before that Incident England had a good chance of winning and I felt they could have done so I was quite taken back when we were robbed like that.. Apparently Some time ago in a documentary which came out years later with Marradonna he mentioned the hand of god Incident and said he did what he did as a kind of revenge against the british for a good friend he lost in the falklands war .. Yes he had his flaws and later in life mixed with the wrong people but I,m pleased his country has honoured him today he truly deserved that.. RIP Diego.

As an icon of football he was up there with the best but tragically like George Best he succumbed to the temptations that were easily obtained.A great career cut short and a life that was ended as a result of drug and alcohol abuse.Very few players could match his skills.

Amazing player I watched him live against Manchester United when he played for Barcelona back in 1984 still to this day one of the greatest games I've watched . Disliked what he did against England for the first goal.but that second goal was pure genius.heaven in building a beutiful team together Gordon banks . Stanley mathews. George best .jack Charlton. Well if youre talking about that Particular goal that should have been disallowed but was allowed what about a particular England goal in a World Cup final that never crossed the line but was allowed...

...and what about Thierry Henry who handled the ball twice in the one move to control it for France against Ireland in a World Cup play off to allow them score the winner ? ..so who is wrong here ?...the player for doing it...or the ref that allows it ???

I'll remember him for his genius on the pitch. His ability to drag his team's to the pinnacle of their success, while surrounded by players with less than half his skill was outstanding.

Sadly he went to Naples and was caught up with the mafia.He did wonders for Napoli leading them to league and European glory.The World Cup win over Italy turned Italian fans against him which is ironic that now they applaud his memory
