Do you remember seeing the behind the scenes footage of one of David Attenborough's series where they show how they got close up footage of flying geese. How a man brought up geese from chicks and they treated him like their mother. And as they grew he taught them to fly and follow him in his land rover, and microlite?

Well, anyway. I was out running this morning, and currently there's lots of people out walking, running and cycling as there's nothing else to do. I was 5km in and a family on bikes came up behind me. Whilst going slightly down hill, Dad and son tootled past, and Mum and daughter were about 50m behind. The daughter seemed to refuse to want to change gear, and so was peddling far too fast for no good result. Just here the road started flattened out and with the OTT pedalling, I ended up running next to them at the same speed. I was still dodging dog walkers etc. up on the grass banks and down again, but kept running beside the bikes. And I felt like despite our total lack of acknowledgement we had built some silent, unspoken bond between us, and we could have both reached out and touched fingertips, perfectly understanding and trusting in each other.

But then ... it was over. I turned a corner as they went on ahead down the hill again.... and left each other forever.

I was the goose.
