make sure you have some thing to eat before you go and try having a drink wiith alot of sugar in it will stop you going light headed!

do not drink any alcohol before having it at all

sugary non alcoholic drinks are best, along with water

i,m on to number 8 soon defs no alcohol because u,ll only bleed more and if there a decent tattoist they won,t even consider doing it if they smell drink ! i usually have a big ulster fry up before going for mine does the trick so no passin out lol remain calm it will hurt a little but will all be worth it in the end good luck

Now I am worried! Have wanted one since my teens but only just decided what is right! At least on my bum it shouldn't hurt too much!

Rub emla cream into the area you're having done an hour before - helps numb it and as its your first could help!

Didn't use any on my first - but have for my others and definately noticed the difference!

And if it feels too painful at any point just ask the artist to pause - better than you twitching and ruining the work!

Good luck and enjoy - once you've had one, they tend to get addictive!!

I find it helps to keep myself distracted, whether thats taking a friend and talking to them, having a chat with the tattooist whilst he does it or even just listening to music, helps take your mind off the pain a bit

don,t be worried u,ll be fine just go well prepared as in fed and watered that type of thing , dos,nt matter were on the body you get it your still gonna feel a little pain but its the sort that u can deal with lol go for it because if you u,ll regret it

Yep - got my last lot at tesco's pharmacy counter!

Oh - and if you need a distraction take an iPod - my last one was an all day sitting so came in very handy!

Am i the only person who just goes in, sits down, grits my teeth and goes home after without taking half of asda in with me to eat anmd drink lol

just out of interest why do you need to keep your blood sugar up for a tattoo, i have many hours of work and never felt the need to have to do this?

i have two and i love them my first goes right across my shoulders and i didnt use and creams or keep my blood sugars up my next one is a full back piece enjoy it hun you will certainly get addicted lol x

No offence meant, just that after all this time, you chose to have one when it is growing amongst young people! Maybe you are at an age where discolouration and distortion won't matter... I do however, wonder what a 30 year old tattoo will look like on a 48 year old..

Good luck with it an take the sugary drinks and sweets route to help keep you from going light headed! X

a lot of tattooists will suggest something sugary as they see so many keel over when they go to stand up.

I have seen it a few times, they are asked 'are you ok, just get up slowly'... 'yeah am fine' and up they jump

and down they fall.....

Don't get anything naff and unoriginal that will date and look shite after the passing phase of fashion, I.E. Crappy stuff like Oriental writing or Celtic patterns, remember you're stuck with it for life!

Buy some anaesthetic cream from the chemist to rub in to where the tattoo is going beforehand. Take a couple of ibuprofen and eat something then Bepanthen is the best cream to use afterwards.

Well I'm 44 and got a fairly large one that is 28 years old and still looks pretty good to me, a mate did it in his kitchen too, so it's not as if I went to a top pro or owt. I think a lot of the fading and stretching is down to folk getting fat, rather than the tattoo itself

lol I did all of this before I got mine, don't want to scare you too much but it still bloody hurt but I love it and have no regrets.

I often ponder on why people have tats ... I don't have any and have never really had the desire to but I would say 90+% of my friends and family have them. Even my 16 yo son had one last month; he is going to add to it next week and wants a half sleeve before the years out. No amount of discussion could dissuade him and as mum is extensively tattooed I suppose any argument I put forward was always going to have a counter argument. Cost is not an issue as a friend of his is doing them FOC (and I must say that he has made a good job so far … but don’t let my boy know)

got my arm done yesterday, 2nd tattoo. just relax, don't tense anywhere, breathe. it hurts but not like you're going to jump or squirm. i take 2 nurofen plus, they are behind the counter only, but they will not thin the blood and they take the edge off a little. try and zone out, sleep...talk whatever is comfortable for you. i tend to look all around the studio at books, drawings..etc

my tattooist has said that the most painful place to have a tattoo is the bum cos the nerve endings are close to the surface .... he has seen grown men cry with the pain!!

I have a pack piece from neck to bum.... Yups it hurts.... But just sit down grin n bare it and hey ho tattoo done....

Won't take long as its not a massive thing you are getting

Very much the same as everyone else, no drink, eat well beforehand and enjoy it. Definitely have someone or something to distract you as the whole "mind over matter" really does work.

My two big ones (3 days each, each day being over 6 hours in the chair) were definitely sore at the end of each day, but by reading a book or playing on my phone, I managed to "zone out" and hardly felt the needle - until he went over the really sore bit again!!

The after buzz from the adrenaline and dopamine is awesome - you will get more!!

I have a tattoo on my foot, have had it for a good few years and I love it. I do have a fear of the lines going thick and distorted so I always cover it with sunblock in the summer. Yes it does mean that sometimes I have a white patch on my foot but I'd rather that than let the sun get to it.

I'd always go and have touch ups to keep the colour fresh.

Just a wquick question for those tattoo enthusiasts, can you get sparkley tattoo ink, would be great if you could

Ive always used Witch Doctor Skin Treatment Gel gel on mine, its cools the skin and dont dry the scabs like some creams can, it is actually a gel and rubs in very easy and keeps the skin really soft so reduces the itching

Everyone will tell you different by ive always used that
